The International Telecommunication Union has just granted first-stage approval ("consent") to two new ultrafast Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) optical broadband standards. The first (NG-PON2) will support Internet download speeds of 40Gbps (Gigabits per second) and on top of that the new XGS-PON aims to deliver a symmetric 10Gbps service (same upload and download rate). By comparison, the previous XG-PON standard only ensured an asymmetric speed of 10Gbps download and 2.5Gbps upload.

This is why FTTH will be amazing once deployed. For a relative pittance eir and SIRO will be able to upgrade their GPON deployments to 4x throughput in a few years time.

Hi I have eirs ftth 1000mbps package I got it upgraded from the 300mbps package however the only change i have seen is the upload speed going up to 95mbps. Download speed through my iPad Air 2 goes no higher than 300mbps when the specs for it say it can operate up to 866mbps. I have contacted eir who have said everything is ok and that I am set up for the 1000mbps speeds but I am not getting anywhere near the promised speed.

Anyone got any answers on this

You will probably never see anywhere close to the max speed, also bear in mind that if any other devices are connected and only have wifi N then all devices will be limited to 300mb. The increase from 300mb to 1000mb will make no difference whatsoever to your ipad.

Your iPad has ZERO use for gigabit. It's like putting aviation fuel in a tractor from the 50's.

300Mb over wifi with the F1000/2000 is very good, to see ~900Mb grab a laptop with a GigE network card and a Cat5e or Cat6 cable. TBH it sounds like you signed up to something you know nothing about...

Are you using Cat6 wired straight to the modem?
