Is identification needed for travelling between Switzerland and Spain

I am an Irish citizen currently in Switzerland. My passport is out of date so I am applying for a new one. I don't have a Irish national ID card but I do have a Swiss residence permit.

I know it is possible to take trains around Europe without any passport or other forms of identification but I am not sure what is the situation when it comes to flights. Can I just hop on plane from Switzerland to Spain with no questions asked?

Anyone got any advice on this situation? Thanks.

These sites seems to say I will need to show some national identification even if I don't have a passport -

Your issue will be getting on the plane without ID I'd say

Spain is one of the few countries in the EU that still requires Advance Passenger Information, so I don't know how they'd let someone in without a country ID or passport. It's probably easier to get around on land, but I don't know how they'd like it if a tourist had no valid identification either.
You may be confusing the travel between Ireland and UK with a work ID or bus card.

I was checked on a train going over the border on a day trip from Basel to Freiburg, handed the guy my B-Ausweis and I was told that he needed my Passport (I had it in my bag, just in case). Same on a train from Munich to Zürich. On the other hand, I flew from Zürich to Berlin without having to show any identification. It is much better to have a valid passport if you can, especially seeing as we never signed up to the Schengen Agreement, so you technically need one.
