    Hello
My friend has been offered an interview for this job on thursday.
Has anyone else been through the application process for this job?

They say he is going to need character references for the last 5 years but no doctor, guard, solicitor or politician has known him for 5 years.
There is also a matter of getting a letter from social welfare to say he has been unemployed since X. Will he need to have this for thursday?
There is no way in hell he is going to be able to get this stuff together for then since they only rang on Monday!

Are they really very strict on this or will employment references and Garda clearance be enough?
Wondering if its even worth his while going to the interview?

If there was a job offer then security clearance would be sought, all of the time of the last 5 years must be accounted for through references etc. They may well ask for these contact details on the day to speed things up if the job was offered.

As a perspective employer, if I received a reference from any of the above I would be dubious straight away.

Has your friend been a volunteer for a charity organisation, NGO, community group, participated in sporting organisation, etc.

To my mind good references from former employers and groups or organisation such as these, will demonestrate far better "Character" than the one's you have originally mentioned.

Your friend's local Intreo office (Social Welfare office) will be only to happy to assist. Be there at opening time Wednesday morning.

How many people actually know people in these professions that could be used as references?

As for the solicitor, im sure that they would charge for the service which actually defeats the purpose :)

Just go's to show how vital it is to get a reference when you are changing jobs. Do not accecpt "just get them to ring us", the person who said that may not be there in a years time, as may well be the case for the company as well.

hang on, he is unemployed and hasnt the time or organisational skills, or both, to go to the dole office over 2 1/2 to 3 working days to get a letter saying he's unemployed ?

not wanting to sound negative, but, seriously?

I think getting the letter off the dole is the easy bit. Its the two character references that have known him for five years thats the difficult part. According to the letter he got those people must be one of : A guard, solicitor, teacher, lecturer, justice of the peace, a clergyman, a doctor or a pharmacist.

He hasnt worked or claimed welfare for the last three months so needs one of the above to account for it.
It turns out he doesnt need the stuff right away and has time to get it together.
They also ask for written references on headed paper from all employers over the last 5 years. I dont think he ever left a job on good terms so he's bolloxed anyway.
Bit of a character to say the least
