Zafira 2006 1.9 cdti sri, head gasket was blowing out water and had to keep topping up water every few days. Got it fixed 2 week ago and while at it, replaced the timing belt, new bolts and injector. Also had to replace something to do with the heater plug modeual.

Today was driving it and it completely died on me and sounded like something snapped!

Tried to start it and nothing, just the dash all lite up with reds.

Is it possible to diagnose this down to a few options?

    Impossible to diagnose.

When you say it sounds like something snapped do you mean something broke (ie a metallic breaking noise)? Or a belt snapped?

Bring it back to who ever done the work. Did they fit a new timing belt or re-use the old one? (I don't know that engine so it may use a chain)

Supposedly a new one went in but you never know. Sounded like a snap

    Title amended.

Get a mech to look at engine and read codes.

Going to presume it possible, not 100% on non Opc cars.

But you can do a pedal test which will bring up fault codes where the mileage is.

    - Take a seat in your car...
    - Press the brakepedal and the accelerator-pedal fully at the same time
    - Turn the ignitionkey till the lights in your dash come on but don't start the car!

In the display where normally your mileage is shown, you'll see "ECN" (error code number) and below it the faultcodes that have been stored. They appear one after another. At the end, your mileage will be shown again.

The first 4 digits indicate the fault, the last 2 digits contain a value.

For example: ECN 161450: problem with communication between immobiliser and key-transponder.

It be somewhere to start, before a mechanic looks at it.

Is it possible to tell exactly what went wrong with codes?

Vacum pump has broke and ruined a few valves and can shaft is damaged. A wheel with teeth on it that is attached to the timing belt that's damaged too, small inslide clip broke.

The mechanic who did the gasket is now trying to tell me its not his fault, thou 3 other mechanics are saying he's liable and that's including 2 Vauxhall mechanics. One even laughed when he heard the mechanic trying to blame the part and not his employee!

What you'd think, is this mechanic at it?

Possibility a apprentice worked at it and got something wrong. But I would suggest talking to someone from a legal background, they would at least suggest the correct avenue to go before you go verbal on anybody involved.
