Nice! Been a fan for a few years now and love watching his live performances on YouTube. Should be a great gig.

He'll probably throw in a bit of Rory Gallagher and Gary Moore too.

No football on either night so we won't be missing a potential knock out tie should Ireland make it out of the group.

Edit: Actually Ireland could be playing on the 30th if they finish 3rd and win the Second Round tie.

Vicar Street is probably my favourite venue ......sound is great and shows are always a bit special, was pleasantly surprised at the lack of nattering and mobiles which made it all the more enjoyable too!!;)

A legend in the making......thanks Joe!;)

I wish I was in the same area as you :(, near me there was this bollox with an annoying laugh, honestly I wanted to strangle him and this other lad was TALKING VERY LOUDLY, it was only noticeable during the quiet bits but still why do people bother to pay 50 euro in and then don't listen, idiots.

He started very early, I arrived in at 8.05 and he had just started, I was surprised the setlist was covers only, I thought he would throw in a few of his own songs, I don't know a whole lot of Clapton/Beck/Page material, the only song I knew was Spanish Boots, but still it was brilliant, the band were solid and Joe is one of the best guitarists in the world, I loved every minute despite not knowing much of the songs and having a few idiots in my presence.

Hope he brings the BCC lads with him when he comes back again.

Would love to go again tonight. Sold out.

Great gig. Won't spoil the set but he did include a few JB songs. Delighted to have seen him live and in such a small venue.
Didn't know the majority of the songs but it didn't bother me in the slighest. Just great music for over 2 hours.

No merch on sale was a bummer for the 1st night. Also I wonder if they band will have a backdrop in place for tonight.

The other guitarist is apparently a Russ Irwin.

Just found the line up from report of Joe's free concert in Cavern Club on 27th

Going tonight, have been a fan for probably 10 or more years now. Have every studio album he's done bar the most recent, which I just haven't got round to getting. Also have 2 of the BCC albums, one of the Beth Hart albums and the Vienna acoustic one.
Saw him live for the first time last year, went to Cardiff on my own and it was a great show. Will be nice to share it with friends and family tonight.
Hes as good as it gets.

Great gig, band were amazing, and Joe is simply a ridiculously talented guitarist.
I've been a fan many years, love his stuff, so it was different to hear him playing what was by and large covers (yes I know he does a lot of these in general, but you know what I mean!) I wouldn't have known a lot of the songs, but the guitar work on them just makes that irrelevant. He makes the songs his own regardless.
Only complaint was that the vocals on some of the louder tunes were a little hard to discern, wasn't expecting that at this venue. Joe is a great vocalist as well, so it must have been to do with the setup at the venue. I heard him last October in a big venue in Cardiff and the vocals were first class, you could make out every word easily.
Only a small issue tho. He's a musical hero of mine and it was a privilege to hear him play in such a small, atmospheric arena.
Delighted to have had that chance.

Got caught out by them starting on the button. Stuck towards the back for a while amongst the talkers, why would people go to a gig and talk all through it. Considering the volume some were shouting to each other, unbelievable!

Still, what a fantastic night. They really went for it, Joe really has a great band around him now. There was definitely a bit of an issue with the vocals, but it didn't really matter considering the quality of the music.

    Was at last nights gig.
Joe is an amazing guitarist, technically brilliant and done almost note perfect, tone perfect renditions of some classic Clapton & Beck tunes,m but....
I found him a bit soul-less, like he's great at doing impressions of the tone and style of some great players, but doesnt have much of his own. A guitar impressionist.

The only one i got any feeling from was his very last tune, sloe gin. No encore either so i felt a little cheated. And being in Ireland, he could have played a Rory tune.
I did also find the overall band sound a bit off, the levels didnt seem right, guitar a bit loud, backing guitarist a bit too quiet and vocals not loud enough and a bit muffled. Nothing majorly wrong but for a pro outfit its not cool.

On the plus, the guitar porn was outstanding, beautiful examples of vintage guitar after vintage guitar, plugged into awesome vintage amps.

Overall, i liked the guitars, he played amazingly, but just copied greats rather than giving his own rendition, overall band sound was not right and i dont think id go see him again.

    'Sloe' gin. :P
    That was the encore.
It was advertised as a tribute to British Blues, had he done Rory Gallagher you'd have had some complaining that he's not British blah, blah, blah. And to be honest, for me people here need to see the music world outside Rory Gallagher when it comes to the Blues. He's great no doubt, but there's more out there.
And Joe did promise to come back and play an entire album of his too!
I think you're very harsh regarding his covers, I think he puts his own stamp on everything pretty much, in a big way. Sloe Gin is actually a perfect example. I'd love to know how many there even realise its not an original from him. But he's made it his own. Another one, Blues Deluxe falls into the same category. I wish he'd played that last night. I thought he would, especially as it's a Jeff Beck number.

It was meant to be 'impressionist'. it was a tribute to British Blues and he had stated who he was paying tribute to. You can't expect him to throw in local heroes or he'd have to come up with any amount during his tour.
British Blues is not noted for it's soulfulness it's more about power and attack and Joe certainly gave it that.
Nothing wrong with the band sound either, vocals yes unfortunately could have been tweaked.
I have been at better Joe concerts but I'm still glad I didn't miss this one

    hmm. let me check..
    ...
    yes, yes i can.

besides, Rory is a little more than a Local Hero when it comes to blues guitar.

    In your opinion maybe?

I agree that bands have good and bad gigs, Clapton is responsible for one of the best gigs was ever at (Point Depo around 2004) and one of the worst (Malahide a few years later).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 851 ✭✭✭yknaa

Thought vocals were a little bit off on the first night too.

I'm in the 'play Rory' camp but can't complain. Thought he might throw in a Rory (or Gary Moore) cover as 2 of the 13 dates are in Ireland and it would have gone down well. No fuss either way.

Did he really mention returning soon? Hope so. Also was there merch on sale on the second night I wonder?

    Next up: Dead Daisies

Yes, sorry, local hero doesn't compute when talking about Rory. I was trying to say that you can't expect Joe to throw in Rory just because he was in Ireland, he'd have to throw in others as he toured.
It would have been great if he did do a Rory number (which would have been an imitation of Rory!!)
I was at Clapton 2004 but didn't get to Malahide.

Every one has different tastes, it's a shame Joe didn't float your boat. I don't know if we'll see him here again, he doesn't get the numbers here, unfortunately.

If you get a chance to see his DVD 'Live at The Beacon Theatre' you'll see what he's capable of

He said he wanted to do a similar gig of Rory stuff, but I'm not sure how serious he was.

It was an absolute privilage to see him live, and I know it was the British blues tour...

But i really, really wanted to hear Mountain Time.

There was no merchandise last night, I was looking for it.

    What a player, though.

Sorry to the dude who was on his own. It very quickly got very hard to move. I made the mistake of going to the jacks after a few songs. Spent the rest of it trying to watch from the door. Stupid, stupid.

Mountain Time, Where I belong & This train would have been great. Its nice to hear a tribute gig, but a little more bit of himself & his own stuff would have improved it a lot.

He said he'd love to come back and do the full Irish Tour album someday soon, but i think that was just to placate the crowd, a few of which were shouting for a song for Rory. After he said that he got a cheer and people didnt ask any farther for Rory. I dont see it happening TBH

In fairness Joe has talked about Rory being a big influence so I wouldn't have been surprised if he did a song or two of his, would have like to have heard him do one but I wasn't overly disappointed when he didn't.

Personally I would have preferred his setlist featuring a lot of his last three albums, I was there the first night only and really enjoyed despite not knowing much of the songs and having a few c*nts near me talking non-stop.

Did he say he'd be back soon? hopefully with BCC they were amazing in 2011.

BCC are no more. Havent been for years.
The only song I really felt he should have played and didn't was Blues Deluxe.

Sloe Gin, Dust Bowl and Blues Deluxe are his best albums. Check them out (they're earlier than the most recent 3 you mention).

i went last night and on my own , i knew none of the tunes but just gazed at the 2 hrs of guitar porn , that said i thought he'd have more than the 4 guitars he used ( 59lp , 335 , strat , gibson firebird )

and the one song i wanted " sloe gin " was butchered by the keyboard player who incidentally played with srv in double trouble
