Vets very expensive for guinea pig mites.

Anybody else find their vets really expensive for the small stuff? One of our guinea pigs has had a case of mites (not severe just average) and she's been to the vets 4 times now, along with her cage mate. It's cost us over €200 so far! She was back in this morning and they will ring with the tape test results later.

If she says she has to go back for another injection and test in 2 weeks I'm just gonna have to say no. I can't afford €140 a month on mites! I'll just keep using the shampoo we already have and maybe an over the counter spot on.

Maybe it's normal but we just can't afford it. can anyone tell me how much they've paid before for this kind of thing. The charge is about €75 for consultation, injection (one for each pig) and 1 sample.

I know when my sister had a similar problem it cost a lot too. Where are you getting your hay from? Sometimes this brings in mites. I stopped using straw bedding because I used to get a lot of crawlies in it. The vet spot on would be much better then the over the counter stuff.

I know our vet used to order it from Bairbre O Malley in Wicklow for us.

We usually buy hay from Maxi zoo, its lovely and green, very fresh smelling too. Its Bairbre O'Malley that we go to so we occasionally buy hay from there too.

I know that you have to keep treating to make sure they are fully gone and I don't want them to come back with a vengeance but I just can't afford €140-150 a month on it.

The last test from 2 weeks ago they found 1 mite. So hopefully this time they won't find any.

I use the treated readigrass hay from Petstop because I have never found any creatures in it. So far so good. I think it is €6 a bag.

They found 1 mite again! :( So back again in 2 weeks. Who knew a tiny might could bring you such misery! The good thing is she isn't infested with them, just the ones that are left seem to be indestructible!
