My timing belt needs to be changed. Got a quote from the mechanic He said it could cost 300 to buy the parts and fit them. He said there's 2 timing belts in the golfs , is he robbing me or us that the normal price

I may be corrected but the mk4 golf only has one belt. I would think that would be the going rate, if a tad over.

    What engine is it. ?

We recently had one done on a mk5 and a minor service for €250. (Back street garage & off the books.)

    He said they have 2 belts anyway. It's a 1.4 16v.

He said around 300 so hoping it'l be a bit cheaper

Probably means the timing belt and the auxiliary belt.

Timing, aux belt and water pump should be done. €300 isn't a bad price.

Yeah 2 timing belts , one on each side of the engine.
Make sure the kit includes the tensioners as well and the water pump.
Make sure the replacement belt is a 'gates' belt , Non genuine belts can be trouble.
I got timing belts and waterpump and tensioners done for 250 a few years back (incl VAT) on a mk4 02 1.4 golf
