Banoffi Pie - 3 questions

    Hi

I'm making Banoffi Pie by boiling the can of condensed milk.
Previously I've boiled up sugar and the milk in a pot.

Has anyone tried the Tesco brand and what did they think? Same as the Carnation brand?

Can I simmer it in a croc pot? I saw on an old thread, someone recommended the boiling time for 2hrs and 20 minutes, would the same time apply in a croc pot?

I'm paranoid about the water boiling off, will it really explode? will there a warning sign or just a big explosion?

Thanks in advance for any help.

    Update incase anyone's interested

Boiled the Tesco own brand condensed milk for 4 hours.
    Turned out great, delicious.

    No explosion so very happy.

When I first started making Banff (while living in Lithuania for 18 months) I bought sweetened condensed milk, and only boiled for 2 hours and achieved the desired effect, 4 hours seems a little long no? (perhaps to save you 2 hours of stove time).

latest though, I've just been buying the already caramelised condensed milk (cheating I know, but 2 hours to boil a tin of milk, plus the mess it leaves your pot in, it just seems easier to but the already done stuff), it does appear to run a lot more when in the fridge, whereas I never had that issue when I boiled it myself!

I couldn't decide how long to boil it for.
I went with 4 hrs because I thought it might be runnier than the carnation brand.

thanks for the tip on the already caramelised milk.
I'll pick up a tin to try it.

If I was boiling again, I'd boil a lot of them at once.
Actually I think i'l try my stock pot if I'm boiling again.

when using the already caramelised milk, I would sit the tin of it in a bowl of warm/hot water for 10-15 minutes, to help it become a little runnier to it was more easily spreadable, now this might be pointless, but I've just always done it this way, thinking if it was warmer, it would be easier to work with!

I just give it a quick whisk.

Didn't realise tesco had their own brand of condensed milk. How much is it?
FYI, Aldi also do condensed milk and the also do tins of caramel now too.

Aldi tins of caramel are so much cheaper than the carnation brand and taste the exact same! I've always had a tin or ten in the press in case I get a longing for banoffee!

I reckon they are carnation - since they do both condensed and caramel. Tesco is probably the real deal also.
I very rarely use evaporated milk, but when I do, I pick that up in Lidl, only about 20 cent cheaper, but still!

I must keep an eye out for the Aldi versions. Sometimes Tesco have the Carnation brand on offer.

I just use the Carnation stuff as a) it's the only one stocked in my local Tesco, and b) I'm sure their all similar enough to each other, but I guess I just like to go brand loyal when it comes to certain things.

They stock it on the shelves over the ice cream usually FYI

I bought the aldi condensed milk for 1.25 last night.
I'll try it very soon so I can compare.
    I'll post a quick update.

ALDI do a tin of caramel for around €1.30 and just put it on top of your digestive biscuit base and the bananas on top and then your cream - job done!
