I am going to be buying a Volkswagen Golf '06 or '07 model and I am just wondering if people think I should go for a 1.4l petrol or 1.9l Diesel?

I live in the subarbs of Dublin, so I do a mixture of motorway driving and city hops. The odd time a long drive down the country. I'd imagine I do about 8,000km-10,000km a year.

I'm fairly clueless as to which is more efficient for the type of driving that i do and would be delighted if some of ye could enlighten me!

If you need more info let me know to advise me better let me know!

    Thanks,

    K

Mileage is quite small and a good deal of city driving then petrol would be the option. Diesel car more expensive and higher tax 07.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

    Why 1.6 petrol?

I've just read on another thread that they are slow and sluggish...I am currently driving a 1.1 Hyundai Getz...I am presuming that the Golf would be much more powerful than this?!

Apologies in advance for my lack of knowledge!

The golf is 80bhp, the Getz is 65bhp, but the golf is heavier. The VW is marginally quicker but is still slow.
A 1.4 Corolla would be more reliable, more powerful, and a better all-rounder than a 1.4 Golf
If you get a Luna model, you'll get climate control, alloys, upgraded interior etc

The 1.9tdi doesn't really suffer issues from doing small miles. I'd take one over a petrol golf tbh. If your looking for a petrol car have a look at the 02-07 model corolla.

If I was looking at a 1.4 petrol Golf I'd seriously consider a bus pass instead.

Thanks Everyone, I really love the look of the Golf's so not really thinking of getting a corolla etc.

Are there any other sporty look cars that ye could recommend to me, 06/06 with about 5k budget?

    Thanks again!

    Hyundai Coupe?

Golfs aren't sporty looking, a coupe looks like it goes fast, even if it's only 1.6 :)

If your looking for a sporty-look car then a high spec Corolla aint too bad?

    Examples:
    Toyota Corolla 1.4 vvti T3
    ** TOYOTA COROLLA .. 1.4 PETROL .. 2005 .. MINT **
05 Toyota Corolla 1.4 vvti New NCT 2/17

After having history with a Corolla and a tiny bit with 1.4 Golfs (only test drives, using them as replacement cars etc) I can tell you that the Corolla was always the more superiour car in my eyes.

They are two really good looking cars from the links that ye have sent me on!

Will definitely have a look at them closer!

From what I am gathering here...it doesn't like a Golf is the car to get....!

    Appreciate it!

What about a 2007 1.6l petrol Ford Focus Zetec? Anyone any experience with these?

There's one in bazzs post above!
Good car, reasonable amount of power, quiet, well equipped.

You could also throw the 1.8l petrol civic in the mix if you are not too worried about the e600 tax. The 1.4l golf while much more solid than the getz will not feel sporty at all.
