Got the below when I queried it the other day.

    "Hi xxxx,

Thank you for renewing your membership and thank you for your patience.

The 2016 licences have just started to be sent out so you should have yours in the next 10 - 14 days.

In the meantime, there is a PDF version available in the My Licence tile in the Portal.

    Best Regards,

    Paul"

    Mine landed this morning.
A pitiful excuse of a licence.
Little more than a piece of paper.

What was wrong with the plastic cards? The paper one might survive in a wallet but that's the last thing I would bring to an event.

They would have given me the credit card type, if I had signed up to an annual direct debit.
They say, that even now, I can get the credit card type, by signing up for direct debit for next year, but I am unable to see how to do it on their website. Probably down to my stupidity.

I always carried my credit card type licence in my waterproof phone bag, but the new one wouldn't last pissing time, if I tried that.

I just laminate it to make it water/sweat proof.

Aaaah - just realised that retirement has one disadvantage. No laminator!

Tried downloading it onto my phone from the CI site but it failed three or four times.

I tried that as well, without success.

    +1, on retirement.

Any chance different categories are being issued different types of card? I'm a leisure member and got the paper one.

Mine arrive this morning too, paper gate-fold version. (Same as last years) Mine is leisure type licence.

I took a photo of it to keep in my phone as this thing wouldn't last pissing time if it got wet.

Limited Competition for me, normal credit card style, same as last few years

Full license for me, credit card type. Got it a week after I paid with my numbers, I must have accidentally done it at the right time!

It sounds as if the leisure only are getting paper licences. I was a leisure member up until a few years ago and we always got the plastic card ones. Seems a bit ****ty to get the paper ones.

I left my wallet in a shop in Kerry one year and the CI license is how I got it back, a girl in the shop checked through the wallet, gave it to the AGS who used the CI card to ring CI, who had my wife as next of kin, who then got that phone call.

    "Hello is this Ms. Cycle"
    "Yes"
"This is Garda Healy, it's about your partner"
    "Oh sh1t"
    "Some bad news"
    "No"
"We found his wallet in a shop, there is no money in it but his ID is still in there"

Anyone with a UCI licence (and all racing licences issued by CI fall into that category - my 11yo has one!) has to receive the plastic card. morana has mentioned in the past there is no need to issue such licences to everyone though - it's only those taking part in official UCI events that need them (and they are colour-coded - different colour for each year) - despite that CI still issue all racing licences as a plastic card.

Would imagine they are saving a few quid by issuing paper ones for leisure cyclists. The colour coding would also now create a bit of an issue, as they've moved to "rolling" rather than calendar year leisure licences. Hence if they had stuck with plastic and someone picked one up in June would they have the 2016 or 2017 colour?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 25,531 Mod ✭✭✭✭CramCycle

Never thought of the rolling year. Makes sense as well as to do more smaller batches would also increase cost.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,561 ✭✭✭Eamonnator

I rang Cycling Ireland this morning, to try and find out why I couldn't sign up for a direct debit and thereby get a credit card style licence. I was very surprised, when I got through immediately to a real person, somewhat less surprised, when I was told, that someone would ring me back about my problem, and not at all surprised, when nobody rang me.

Mind you, I was delighted to be told by the answering machine, that my call to C.I. was very important to them.

Got mine in about week and a half. Was expecting it to be a lot slower given what Id heard but no it arrived very quickly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,305 ✭✭✭Mercian Pro

I contacted CI through their website pointing out the impracticality of a paper licence and the problem downloading an e-version. I got a nice automated email back pointing out that they are experiencing large volumes of queries at this time but that my query is important to them and they will endeavour to respond within 48 hours. Hopefully I will hear back from them in the next day or two and will post their reply here.

On the issue of the rolling leisure licences, I just checked my (still intact) paper one. The only place a year is mentioned is on the inside which will be invisible if I end up laminating it. It states "2016 Cycling Ireland Licence" which seems to be at odds with the idea of it being rolling.

As for the additional cost, my old place of work had a desktop printer that could print plastic ID cards at very low cost.

...The only place a year is mentioned is on the inside which will be invisible if I end up laminating it....
It's also on the front - the first 2 digits of the licence number denote the year e.g. 16LMxxxxx for me.

(It can be laminated in the open position and folded over afterwards. If done when the plastic is still warm, the fold becomes more permanent.)

That's mad, i applied for mine in February and had it in about 10 days, I presume it is nothing to do with how quick your club secretary deals with it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,131 ✭✭✭Bambaata

Club sec had approved before that. That was the date I was approved and went online and paid. Online it says licence was printed start of Feb but no date against posted

Perhaps your club secretary ticked the box to deliver licences in bulk to himself for distribution within your club. Not sure of the benefits of this method for a club, against the posting of licences directly to individual members, but you should contact your secretary if you are a member of a club.
Having your licence and numbers saves hassle on race days.

I paid for mine five weeks ago and still haven't gotten it. I emailed them twice and twice I was told that there was a backlog of printing them but that I'd get mine in a few days....but still nothing. This is a bloody joke.

Paid for my license about 3 weeks ago, didn't use direct debit,
received it after about 10 days, limited competition, got credit card type,
Looked in post box yesterday and received a second complete license pack ,
Away now to check bank account to make sure they didn't take 2 payments

Check the licence number. Each LC number is unique. If you have 2 different ones you have probably either been charged twice or have someone else's!

Still no licence and I got the same response from CI for the third time, ie "we had a printing problem but your licence is in the post now". Same crap I've been getting for weeks. Bloody joke.

    Checked last night,
both cards have the same LC number,
Also only one payment to CI on bank account.
Must be some type of glitch on their system that I received 2 packs....

Me being me,leaving things on the long finger,is there anyway i could race if i payed up for the license but my actual card hasn't arrived yet?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,450 ✭✭✭Harrybelafonte

When you get your licence, look it over. I've just put all my sh!t in the back for a race and noticed they have me as A4 again. That may have been my error when applying, but I don't think so. I really don't want to be A4 again this year.

No-one needs a one day licence if they are already registered on the CI website. They can present the PDF version downloadable from the portal

The only potential delay in registering will be if the club takes a while approving someone

Still waiting for a reply. I know this isn't a life or death issue but why are they so inefficient?

Even though my phone call was very important to C.I., they haven't yet deemed it important enough to return it.
    Very bad form.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 268 ✭✭Domane

Still haven't gotten my licence despite getting three emails from them saying that they had "printing problems but they've now been resolved and I will get my licence shortly". Absolute BS. I've a couple of sportives coming up and I don't know if the organisers will accept a print out pdf as it looks like a cheap copy.

Last time I fork out €40 to Cycling Ireland.

They should, not sure why anyone would think they wouldn't.

If I was in their shoes, I'd be dubious about a copied piece of paper that says I'm a CI member. They give discounts to CI members so that they don't have to insure them for the event in question as a CI member has cover as part of their membership. A piece of paper in lieu of a proper licence would give me cause to suspect that the holder of said paper is just looking for a cheaper entry and thus would not be covered if an incident occurred.

I presume its not much different than when I sign a form in the UK saying I am covered by CI, if I have lied, the fault is mine, not the organisers as I misled them, I could be wrong, but I presume they would argue that they would argue reasonable attempts at proving membership had been made.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Why would anyone even bother? They could not contest the points for fear of being found out and would not be insured thereby risking a claim against them personally should they cause an accident.

They have been accepting paper for many years - previously it was a copy of the e-mail confirming membership. I've never heard of any problems. Have you?

Yes, I don't think I ever been asked to produce my licence at a sportive - they usually ask for the number.
