Drove a focus saloon with 205 50 17 tyres on it, thought they looked very big,

Can 16 be fitted or does it throw out the speedo etc?

17 in the tyre size stands for the inch diameter of the inside, or the wheel that it fits on. 205 is the width of the tyre... Narrower tyres smaller number etc.

As far as I know the number you would need to vary is the middle, in this case 50. A smaller number is lower profile.

Ome way to be sure your speedo is accurate is to use the same overall diameter tyre that was originally intended. You could fit a bigger wheel with a lower profile tyre. The tyre would then look slicker.

205/50r17 is the correct size. a lot of people would change them to225/45r17 as they're cheaper and roughly the same outside circumference.

keep in mind the cost of these compared to a 16 inch tyre if you're doing mileage.
