Motor tax for 1 month?

Hi. I looked online and couldn't find any info on this so thought I'd try here.

My situation is like this...we have a car on which tax will expire in March. We've ordered a new car which is expected to be ready for collection in late April, at which point we will be handing over our car as a trade in. On the online tax renewal system, the minimum period you can buy is 3 months, but does anyone know if you can call them up and arranged to buy tax for a shorter period?

Also, just out of interest, if we do need to pay for the full 3 months, can you transfer tax between the vehicles (they will be same CO2/tax bracket)

    Cheers

Tax can't be transferred, and minimum period to tax a car is 3 months. I was in the same period in Jan, and the tax on my car for 3 months was €268, so the garage gave me a loan of a car.

Minimum is 3 months tax but I think you can claim a refund of the time the car is off the road, not so sure when you're trading it on.

No, you can't change tax between cars.

For the refund you must also have 3 months of tax to be refunded as a minimum. So that rules that out too. OP your options are:

1 - take the hit by taxing the car for 3 months and trading it in after 1 month.

2 - Not pay tax and run the risk of garda checkpoint / stop or traffic warden. In this case, the car cannot be seized as tax needs to be out by 2 months or more. Non tax won't stop the trade in as any tax arrears is wiped out with a new owner of vehicle.

Thanks...per option 2, is there any reason for the dealership to get pissy about us handing over a non taxed car or does it make no odds for them?

Makes no odds to them at all. The car could be a year out of tax and it makes no difference. Whoever buys the car is only liable for tax from the day they buy it.

So even tho you should be paying tax while driving your car, if in your shoes I'd prob chance it. But the risks are if caught, you'll have a fine and possible points. So is it worth the risk. As I said, car will not be taken from you for no tax as it needs to be out by 2 months or more.

Has anybody here ever been pulled over for a car being out of tax by just a month? I've been in the situation a couple of times and I've always just been waved on by the guard bar one time when I told him I had just done it online before leaving the house, again just waved on my merry way.

No points for out of date tax.

    Nct yes.
    Insurance yes.
    No licence yes.

    Op drive away.

Obviously its wrong but we all let things slide or miss the exact renewal date.

TBH I will probably just pay the full 3 months as it isn't a huge amount of money, just was interested in options. Thanks for info.

Right you are, no points for no tax. Bear with me, I got a whole 10 mins sleep at 6am after work :D

Afaik the fine will prob be about the equivalent of a months tax anyway depending on what the OP is paying so unless he's unlucky to get caught twice in one month :D

I know which option I'd be going with.

Basically op don't bother if you do get stopped most likely they will tell you to tax and may also ask to produce at local station.

Keep her lit I wouldn't be worrying.

You need tax for 1 month. They tell you, you have to pay for 3 months.

So it's either they'll screw you for 2 months, or you will screw them for 1 month.
    Choice is yours.

How much is the tax for 3 months , if it's for a petrol monster costing 2k per year i'd risk not taxing it for the month . If it for a hybrid costing 30 for 3 months i'd tax it. Risk and reward .

Sure you have the whole month to tax it anyway right?
I've never seen anyone done for having tax out a few weeks.

no you don't have any "grace" period to tax it. If it has no disc up you can get a ticket.

If your car is a trade in as part of a scrappage offer it is likely in the terms that the car has to have tax. But talk with them if this is the case.

To get 1 month tax pay for 6 months and request a refund for 5.

Most guards will give you a grace period and always have. Traffic wardens won't so it depends on where you park.

The only ways you can get a refund is if you are scrapping the car, and you have to have a certificate to say its scrapped (i.e. a dealer scrappage scheme will not suffice) or if you export it outside the jurisdiction.

well if your buying new car and have proof of deposit and all, im sure the guards wont care as they know you wont be driving the car much longer..... i could be wrong :)

Just to add to that you can also reclaim a refund of motor tax if you havn't used a vehicle in a public place since the commemcement of the current tax disc, if you can't use your vehicle due to injury, illness etc or it's been stolen and not recovered or the owner is out of the state due to educational, business or defence forces reasons (all assuming a minimum 3 months tax remains).
