Stupid question. But what exactly is a back boiler.

I think it's something that's connected to a stove. But I don't know how it's connected or where it resides in relation to the stove or what it looks like (is it a tank or something) and its size

Can be a nubmver of things so some stoves have a boiker built into them I.e. you light a fire and it heats your radiators...... another type sits in the back of your open fire and when you light the fire it heats tge radiators in your house..... so essentially it sits in the back of your fire and Is connected by pipework to your heating system. ;)

Thanks. I'm just trying to visualise it. So if I have a stove and I light the fire, how is the heat transferred to the back boiler. Is the back boiler a tank that contains water essentially ?

    Yes, exactly.

Does the back boiler have a pump ?

Does water circulate around the walls of the stove ?

In regard to an oil heating system with an oil boiler etc. I understand that water is heated via the boiler and flows around the system. Then it seems each radiator has hot water going in and cold coming out. Or is it the other way round.

And when the heating is turned on. How is there cold water flowing in or out of radiator - is the water not just all hot ?
