ESTA is not a visa. Your next step is to apply for a visitor visa (B-2) http://dublin.usembassy.gov/tourist_business/tourist-b-2-visas.html

This is unfortunately very, very unlikely to be approved in the few weeks before you travel, but best of luck to you.

Don't cancel your plans until you have been denied a visa. The ESTA is not a visa. You may have completed the ESTA form incorrectly, or you may have the same name as someone on a Watch list. Apply for the visa as soon as possible, but if you are going in a few weeks, see if you can get it expedited. If you can't get the visa in time, or you apply and you are refused, then you can't travel to the US from Ireland.

Did you answer Yes to any of the questions you have to answer No to?
Do you have a communicable disease; physical or mental disorder; or are you a drug abuser or addict? *

Have you ever been arrested or convicted for an offense or crime involving moral turpitude or a violation related to a controlled substance; or have been arrested or convicted for two or more offenses for which the aggregate sentence to confinement was five years or more; or have been a controlled substance trafficker; or are you seeking entry to engage in criminal or immoral activities?

Have you ever been or are you now involved in espionage or sabotage; or in terrorist activities; or genocide; or between 1933 and 1945 were you involved, in any way, in persecutions associated with Nazi Germany or its allies?

Are you seeking to work in the U.S.; or have you ever been excluded and deported; or been previously removed from the United States or procured or attempted to procure a visa or entry into the U.S. by fraud or misrepresentation?

Have you ever detained, retained or withheld custody of a child from a U.S. citizen granted custody of the child?

Have you ever been denied a U.S. visa or entry into the U.S. or had a U.S. visa canceled ?

Have you ever asserted immunity from prosecution ?

Have you ever stayed in the United States longer than the admission period granted to you by the U.S. government? ?

    Update

I tried ringing the embassy could not get to talk to anyone in person without applying for a visa.
So I decided to give the ESTA a second go filled out this time it took no money straight away but gave me a message authorisation pending.checked back a few hours later and travel had been granted.

My advise to any one its a simple form to fill out but don't do like me rush through it take a bit of time and avoid the slight panic that was in our house for 24hrs

Was it the official site you went through, I thought it locked you out if you made one unsuccessful attempt?

    https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/

    There's lots of unofficial ones...

Was thinking the same, never heard of an Esta being denied & a second application being approved on the official site, have heard of an approved Esta changing status to denied though & the traveller not informed of the change, as above OP, did you use the official site the first time?

Great, but....... isn't there a question along the lines of....... have you have ever been denied a travel permit/visa........

It asks have you ever been denied a visa yes but an ESTA is not a visa i emailed the embassy also explained my case I actually got a reply back after I filled out the ESTA again.

Does that answer the last few posters and their speculative assumptions on the matter.
