I have a mint 1980 Ford Escort Mk2 here, and I was wondering how would I find out how much it's worth if I was to sell it?

I don't want to just put an ad and have it over/under priced.

    Any help or info appreciated!
Can also post pics for anyone interested in seeing it!

Try the Irish Escort Club forum. Theres a lot of really genuine lads on there that could help you out with a valuation. Price is incredibly variable depending on wether it's 2 or 4 door, and on mechanical spec. Saloons in great nick can bring anything from 5.5-7k wheras a decent 2 Door is easily 12k+, with the addition of decent spec of engine and other upgrades bringing the price upwards.

I see brand new 2 door shells for sale for €10,000.

The Chinese, a great bunch of lads, have started re-making all the body panels in the past few months. Talked to someone recently that looked at the first few that arrived in the UK before Christmas and he said they were spot on, and galvanised!! Very handy route for the rally boys after a smash, but lends itself to that lovely area of cough-log books-cough

not at all. The one time when re-shelling is allowed is when using a new shell.

Not in this country I'm afraid. when using a new chassis a new registration must be carried out to include vrt etc. The escort is of unibody or monocoque design ie, incorporating the chassis rails into the body shell

I didn't think that was the case but I'll take your word for it

I don't think that's the case either. I know of an A124 320 cabriolet with no VIN number on the shell. Turns out that the car was fitted with a new 'spare part' shell a year into its life. Spare part shells cannot have a VIN as they are a spare part. It presents a few issues particularly with the NCTS and as all MB A124 spare parts sells were painted white, it looks as though its a ringer if the car wasn't painted properly at the rebuild stage. Some very late A124 Cabs were built from 'white shells' !!

years back my employer reshelled a Transit with a new shell, took on the id of the crashed one....regulations may have changed I suppose.

Escort prices are funny. Good Basic 4 doors (Popular, Popular Plus, etc) are worth a few grand. 4 door Ghias are worth a bit more. But for the four doors to be worth anything, they have to be properly mint, and not the typical Irish mint of held together with isopon.

2 doors are something similar, but the price of the ordinary ones really depend on the condition. The Mexico & RS have a huge premium but again are really dependant on condition. For value, I turned down an offer of €15k for my Escort, a never restored matching number 2 door Ghia, with FSH.

Edit - German built Escorts have a premium also as they are perceived to be better built with better steel. The build country can be checked off the chassis number.

To be brutally honest. Who is going to know/care/ask. It's not like there isn't enough of that going on already.

    Hey,

I have 2 mk1 escorts myself. The thing about the escort scene is that there are 2 main types of buyers.

Type 1: People who want a desirable car with heritage and is genuine. In mk2's these are your 2 door, rs / mexico / sport guys who want a car to enjoy and socialise with. The money in these cars is spent getting something to preserve and resell.

Type 2: Any 2 door shell will do, its going to get chopped and changed into a rally or drift car regardless. The money in these cars is spent in customising it and turning the car into a beast.

Nothing wrong with either buyer, but from what I've seen in mk2's, the second type of buyer makes more money on their car. Which is a complete contrast to mk1's where the first type of buyer nearly doubles their money on a clean car restoration.

What type of mk2 is it? This could better outline the type of buyer you should try find.

I price my cars in sterling, because there's a better market in England. A good mk2 should be 7-11k. A sport would be 11-15k, and an rs / mexico goes upwards of 20k sterling.

Some people are even asking upwards of 35k for a mint mk2 with all papers and heritage / period mods.

Its a totally standard 1980 1.3L model, not a scratch or mark to be seen, washed and polished every Sunday and valeted, only extras it has is a middle console inside and recently got new Superlite alloys

If thats the case and it has been looked after properly I would hold out for 8-12k on it. Some people in here might gasp at that, but you will get it if the car is correct. Clean cars are near impossible to find and if your mods are period they wont affect the value.

Consider that most of the guys who want a 2 door mk2 want it to strip down and rally. Those Asian reproduction shells go for 10k. Your car is genuine ford. The shell alone is worth 10k+. Whatever about seats and engine.

It would probably knock 2/3's off the price in that case

Is it German built or UK built?. What's the first letter of the chassis number? Really solid German built 4 door shells are worth a few grand for the endurance car build. I'm thinking of doing something like that in the next few years, but was hoping to use a 1.6 Ghia simply for the bigger stove.

The value is as red_ice is spot-on for a 4door.
