Budget around 2000

    Hi there,

I'm looking to buy my first car, I'm 23 and have my full license 1 year (2 in June).

I drive around 200km a week between going to college and work.

I've been looking at Golfs, Passat, Corollas. Beyond that I'm not sure what's reliable as from what I've seen so far most of these will come with a high mileage. Insurance quotes seem to be around 1200-1600 depending on the 1.4 and the 1.9Tdi(Petrol vs the Diesel Golf) around the 1600 mark for the passat diesels as well. Which doesn't seem too bad? (could be wrong)

    Manual preferred.

At least 2002 for insurance purposes as well, they seemingly don't like anything older from what I've checked.

Wondering if you guys/girls have any suggestions on what to look at?

    Thanks :D

200 km per week is not alot of driving to justify the need for a diesel. Add the extra cost of higher motor tax to that. Also with such a tight budget it might stretch further with a petrol car, most VAG diesels in the 2k bracket will be well worn at this stage and could be a potential money pit. 2k may get you a half decent 2002/2003 newer shape Corolla. They are way livelier than a 1.4 Golf and more reliable too.

Thanks for the info! I'll have a look for some more Corollas. Any other cars you think are worth having a look at?

    Ford Focus.

good car, but isnt the 1.6 meant to be a joke in terms of power?

The 1.6 petrol is fine in the Focus, 1.4 has similar performance to a 1.4 Golf. The Corolla 1.4 litre offers the best performance in that class and price range but the OP asked for alternatives.

A Nissan Almera 03-07 should not be overlooked
