If it wasn't declared off the road you are liable for the tax from December 2015. If it was I'd wait till the first of March and pay it then.

Once the owner changes the tax is due for the new owner only from the new ownership date.

    So March would be preferable!

You are liable from date on logbook when you both sign it. It will take afew days for logbook to go from seller to shannon to you.

Just sign date of sale as 1st march.

Get seller to take a pic of completed form if they are worried about being caught with possible speeding fines/toll charges between now and then.

Park it up once home if possible.

    Why give wrong advice?
Whether it was declared off or not makes no difference to a new owner.
New owner pays from start of month that they took ownership so you will pay from start of Feb if bought today or stay of march If bought early in march.

What's more, you get 21 days to declare it off the road should it be out of use and you wish to tax it from March but buy now.

How many times does this same question get asked?

That would be a fraud - a criminal offence... Encouraging one is a criminal offence as well...

    Be aware...

Minimum off the road declaration is 3 months, so that isn't an option if the OP wanted to tax from March., but car can still be taxed at any time during the off-road declaration.

More incorrect info. You can declare for 3 or 12 months, but you can retax at anytime which cancels the SORD.

How some people on here seriously present their 100% wrong opinions as facts is beyond me

    1. New owner only pays from date of purchase.

    2. New owner not liable for any arrears.

    3. Previous owner is not liable for any arrears once car is sold.

    4. Car can be taxed online once ownership has changed and can be checked on motortax.ie

    5. If you purchase a new car and for whatever reason decide you wont be using it you have 10 days from purchase (change of ownership)...

All info available on citizens info and motortax.ie.

Apologies, not thinking straight (tired after the pub head :) ) you are indeed correct and I stand corrected! Post edited, thanks for the quick clarification.

Anytime I've declared a car off road (twice) I never considered the re-tax option within the timeframe.
