    Hello Folks,

I need to clean a range which has been laying up for a while. However the amount of glazed tar-like soot inside is astounding. Some of this is still softish while some is rock hard. Is there any handy way of removing it? Any products which can dissolve or disintegrate it?

    Thanks

I clean our stoves glass with ash on wet rag and it comes of no bother. You could try take. Other than that fire up a good hot fire and it should burn off eventually.

    tks ding,

but no, a good fire will not take it away. There is too much. And as I said its a range, so the cresote is everywhere including surrounding the oven where no flame reaches.
#I have taken it apart and the smell is something else.
Good range but did not have an adequate chimney and was used for burning a lot of damp turf. So am redoing chimney and connections but Cannot install it the way it is un;less totally cleaned.
I lived in the USA a few years and there is no end to the products there for dissolving creosote. I just thought there might be something similar here.

    Thanks

Would it be worth trying an oven cleaner- I've used it to removed caked on grease and burnt oil from mechanical parts with some success.

It's readily available, used for cleaning drains, grease and stripping paint. Some hardware shops, supermarkets, paint shops or even pharmacies (eg Boots) stock it. Take care, it's corrosive and can give nasty burns.
