I have a medal from 1966 .It has Merville trophy athletics 1966 Ovens AC engraved on it..

I won that trophy in Deerpark in Cork in 1966.The trophy took about 7 months to get to me and as it was perpetual I had to hand it back shortly afterwards.I would love to know where it went to or what happened to it or indeed who won it next. Merville produced ice cream I think back in those days.

    Any ideas?

I can't imagine anybody on this forum would be able to help you with this. Best bet is to contact Cork Athletics and Athletics Munster. There's bound to be somebody involved there who would know somebody who could help you.

Out of curiosity, could you tell us about your event in and how you came to get the medal?

Condo131 is very old knowledgeable :) about all things athletics in Cork, doesn't post much these days, but I note he was online a couple of days ago so may have input.

My sport was polevaulting and high jumping. I setup 2 records on that day in deerpark and eventhough other lads had won more medals at the event the
powers that be decided to award me the trophy for best athlete of the day. I was so proud. The trophy hadnt been made yet so I went home with my medals and waited for the Merville trophy to turn up . It took about 7 mts but it eventually turned up.It was a pepetual trophy so I had to hand it back all too soon.I never did see it awarded after that .It was 50years ago this year...

It was so great to be involved in athletics at that age .Its stays with you for life.Great happy memories..Every kid should have a go at something on track or field.

    Thank for the tip. Btw...

Just for interest sake, did you stay involved with the sport? If so, in what capacity? If not, why did you drift away?

I'll hold my response to that one for a more favourable (to me) time! :) ....Revenge best served cold!:D

Anyway, wrt the OP's Q, there is a County Board meeting on Wednesday next, so I'll ask about it there. There will be others there who are even older more knowledgable.

Im afraid my cartilage in my knees broke down and I never fully recovered after the operation.Ovens AC disbanded sometimes shortly after that.Study ,work and then emigration took over so I lost contact with hands on athletics. Thanks to all for your replies...
