Looking through ads I saw a car that interested me as its auto and local but comparing prices on other ads for same car and yr I'm unsure whats a fair price as they vary between €500 and €1800.

It's a 03 Scenic on UK plates, ad states VRT is €600. Milage is 115,00m and it's had a couple of new bits like alternator and power steering pump only 2 mnths ago.

I know nothing about cars so was hoping someone could tell me what a fair price would be please.

It's not worth much more than the cost of VRT to be honest.

I picked up an 05 scenic 2 years ago for €1250

They're cheap as chips and that's usually down to the issues they have which are mainly electrical. Window regs/Door locks/lights/ anything that switches generally tends to fail at some point to be honest.

The engines tend to be ok but the newer model 1.6 engine in the scenic has an issue with the dephaser pulley failing.

In short I've had 2 scenics and would buy a third as they're cheap and generally repairs can be carried out by myself.

Thank you that's very helpful,. It is a 1.6 engine.

I couldn't do work myself as I really am clueless when it comes to cars so it'd have to be garaged. I don't expect miracles from an older car but it's very helpful to know what to look for.

By having a 1.6 engine it's not the end of the world I have one sitting on the drive a s a second car that has never had an issue with the dephaser pulley.

The obvious points to look for on the newer models
    • Windows - check all 4
    • door locks
    • key cards
    • wipers/washer front-rear
    • digital dash for any mixing pixels
    • auto hand brake
    • lights - indicators/fogs etc
    • interior lights
    • sunroof operating as normal
    • Auto lights
    • warning lights on dash

If the dephaser pulley is on the way out you will hear it on start up, particularly from a cold start. It will sound very tapety and may take a few attempts to start. If viewing a car make sure it's cold when you arrive as a car that's had a run before you arrive will sound better on start up.

You can be lucky and unlucky I guess. Hopefully you're lucky. :)

That's brilliant thank you. I'll make sure to go through the checklist. I'd never heard of the pulley before and a car already warm wouldn't raised questions to me, probably quite the opposite I'd have assumed it showed the car ran so was a good thing.
