So got my provisional licence in 2009 and 2011 I was disqualified for driving under the influence of weed, 4 years off the road whilst on my second provisional. Stupid ang ignorant of me I know. Now Ive got my provisional back and have a 1.4 focus 04 which I want to get insured on and plan on doing my full test after a month or so back on the road just to get back into the swing of it. I've tried a few insurance companies which either will not quote me at all or are saying somewhere between 5000 and 6000 for insurance!!! Has anybody else had this issue or please have any advice on what to do or who to turn to. The way it stands now I'd be better off not driving ever again.

What outcome do you think that there could be?
You haven't been outright declined insurance, and the premium seems reasonable for the risk you represent.
You might not like the premium, but then insurance companies don't like learners who drive stoned.

Try following up this link :

Read what it says about the Declined Cases Agreement as that might be a way forward.

You're lucky to even get a quote of €5k.

Put yourself in your prospective insurer's shoes, would you insure someone for risk of an accident, with a history of drug taking and poor decision making?

Get a quote as a named driver, you'll probably have to do it on a parent's policy.

Expect the possibility of their policy to go up circa €2k.

You're a massive risk, they're reflecting that in their price.

3000 + sounds about right for a provisional driver

P.S. Please remember to declare fully to insurers to whom you propose for insurance the full details of the conviction(s) and the fact that you have been refused insurance and or that you appear to have been subject to a loading.

These are called material facts. Failure to declare them will render any insurance void and it is also an offence under S. 64. RTA 1961.

OP did you also ask for a quote for when you'll have a full licence? And I'm assuming the 5-6k quotes were done stating you have a provisional licence?

Please tell me if I'm wrong, but if that's going to be in a month or so, OP could pay the 5k, then do the test and tell them they've got a full licence and they'll give OP some money back.

Of course this all depends on what you will be quoted when you're holding a full licence, I have no idea how high it will be due to that disqualification, hopefully it's going to be considerably lower than 5k?

Why not do lessons then apply with a full licence. Shock horror what you're meant to do.

If you get pulled driving on a learners permit (there is no such thing as a provisional licence any more) I'd expect you to be taking the bus for the medium to long term.

Edit: I'd also get rid of the focus and find out from the lads in the motors forum what's the cheapest to insure.

Nissan Micra K11 would be your best bet, to save you deal with some of the crap you'll get on Motors. They cost anywhere between 1k and 4k depending on condition and mileage and they're cheap and cheerful and ideal for people learning to drive. They also give you a sense of your place on the road, which sounds like it might be useful.

Now I know why it's always a Micra! :pac:

The sample quote in insurance adverts is almost always a 4 year old Micra

I have doubts he will have it in a month. He has to do x amount of lessons first with a professional instructor and depending on when he can apply for the test (before or after these) he be waiting for a while for the text depending on the waiting list.

Also if/when he passes he will be on N plates for 2 years
