Most plumbing shops, or even you oil supplier may supply oil tanks.

Make sure it is properly supported to you manufacturers spec to avoid cracking, and as per building regulations (Part J)

Sorry I meant to post this pic. The tank is ok its the green cap in the middle ( not the filler) that is cracked. I posted the tank pic so you knew who made it.

Does anyone know where I can get a green cap like that.?

Unscrew it. Turn it over and pack it with isopon, plastic padding or any of the other plethora of such products. Replace and Robert is ur uncle.

That looks like it's cracked from the sun or something

You might want to replace the whole tank in case it splits open after filling it

Expensive mess to clean up, have to get the soil around it disposed of properly

Those bungs crack all the time. Unless beneath a leaking gutter etc. they don't let in any significant amount of water. I often repair them during a service, but never find any water in the tank due to cracks like the one shown.

sorry meant the tank itself would want to be checked near the corners etc for signs of cracks

The most common cause of water in oil tanks is normaly rain water dripping in over years at the treads on gauges and blanking plugs. It takes years, but a lot of tanks are over 20 years old, so sealing treads is also advisable.
Manufactures have stoped fitting plugs due to that.

Thanks guys the tank is no more than 10 years old. One plumber I had visit was trying to suggest the tank was cracked and wanted to install one of those small 20L drum to get me going. Said there was water in the tank, it would need draining etc. 300 euro to start!!

Got another guy in. He tipped the tank, put brick under one side, poured off water, bled fuel line in boiler, serviced boiler, for 160 I think it was.

Thinking about it the split might have been due to me resting the drums on the tank while pouring it into the tank. ?? Bad idea?

Easy temporary fix is to rub a bar of soap into fill the cracks and stop water getting into your tank

What about using silicon sealant? I've never heard of the isopon, plastic padding or even the soap fix

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 3,496 ✭✭✭DGOBS

if there is oil present, silicone won't seal it.

Ok the tank is about 1/4 full. Soap repels the oil? At the moment it has gaffer tape on the outside.

Silicon on dry clean plastic, ie the top where it will not be in contact with oil will work.

A crack in the side thats leaking oil can be "temporarily" sealed (for a day) by rubbing a bar of soap into it, till plumber replaces tank.

Hi all I'm still unable to find a replacement cap, is my only solution to seal the outside with silicon sealant?

Maybe go with a composite sealant ( MS11, TEC 7 ) as these will be better than plain old silicone
