Ok this might sound crazy but i can assure you I'm not mad. I just noticed this evening that the left hand side front daytime running light on my 11 passat is being switched on and off by engaging reverse in the car( In other words its behaving like a reverse light) WTF??!!

Yes, I think that's a thing, and depends on the angle of the steering wheel.

Its when you turn the fogs come on as to light up bends at night.

Depending on model and spec where some have fog light and drl right beside each other.

Years ago my dad had a primera and fog lights would come on front when brakes were applied it was found to rear brake lights blew and some how was lighting front fogs.

Another thing it might be is reversing fogs, they come on when reversing for more light. If only one is coming on the right hand side DRL could be blown. They'd need to be coded so unless that was ever done ignore this.

The front fog lights/DRLs are used as cornering lights on that model Passat.

So am I correct in thinking this is normal bazz26?

This feature operates when you have turned on your main lights, so night driving basically. When you put the car into reverse the fog lights are activated. It seems to be on most current VW cars.

If one is blown this will be displayed on the MFD when you turn on the ignition also an orange bulb will appear on the speedo somewhere.

Mystery solved! the lights are associated with steering wheel angle as most of you suggested. I am at a loss to know what if any advantage it is but there you go. Many thanks to all who contributed. Isn't technology wonderful:)

It is to light up the turn/corner instead of fitting lights that actually turn when you turn the wheel like in the Insignia.
