According to a small piece in today's SBP next Friday (Feb 26th) is the deadline for expressions of interest to bid for the Irish TV rights for the next WRC in Japan.

It will be interesting to see if RTE go all out for this given that TV3 have 6 nations

Also let's not forget that a lot of these games will be very early in the morning.

Also worth remembering with this tender is the listing arrangements. Only Irish games are listed. This opens the way for pay-TV companies to bid (and Setanta were primary rights holders in 2007 and 2011, with packages sublicenced to RTE in 2011 and TV3 in 2007).

The fact that they are running the UK and Irish tenders simultaneously is obviously to leave open the possibility of Sky or BT Sport bidding for the rights in both markets.

ITV or the bbc should get the UK rights

I think rtetv will get the irish rights as the times would not suit tv3 for ads

The Telegraph has exclusively reported that ITV are to retain their rights for the next two WC tournaments.

Interesting to note the article saying that Sky did not bid for the Japan WC but had made a bid for the tournament in 2023.

Be interesting to see if ITV go after the Irish rights too - this is the first major set of sporting rights to come up since they entered the Irish market.

"ITV will show the Rugby World Cup exclusively for the next two tournaments, under the terms of a new deal announced on Saturday.

The two event deal extends ITV’s long partnership with the sport’s showpiece event and will also see the broadcaster show the Women’s Rugby World Cup this year, as well as the World Rugby U20 Championship between 2017 and 2019."

I'm not a fan of dragging up old threads, although I'm willing to give a bit of latitude in Broadcasting owing to it being less busy and threads staying on the front page for longer.

If we are going to do it, perhaps fair to mention that Eir Sport won the Irish rights to the 2019 World Cup last year. They will still have to sublicence Ireland's games to a Qualifying Broadcaster.

Will this deal for ITV include every live game from all the tournaments mentioned in it or not?

Yes for the RWC and likely also for the WRWC. Not sure about the U20s as IIRC that was with Sky - might be a similar deal to what TG4 used to have.

So where does this leave the 100,000s of Virgin Media customers in Leinster?
Neither eir nor ITV1 are currently carried so as it stands we are limited to the ~13 games that must be available to an FTA channel? And maybe some minor games that ITV move to ITV4.

I'd say that ITV4 will be blocked on Virgin for RWC games. We still don't know if ITV2, 3 and 4 are to remain with Virgin.

Tournament is still 2 1/2 years away. My suspicion is that the Eir Sport dispute will be resolved by then, but then again, it's been five months and there's been no movement.

Unfortunately if it's not resolved a move to another provider is the only option.

Have they ever even spoke since - I doubt it.

Eir has sublicenced all of Ireland's games in the Women's RWC to RTÉ:
