Ford Fiesta 2008 Key fob remote not working

The key opens / locks the door ok and the internal boot release works fine but the remote doesn't work.

So I replaced the cell battery cleaning contacts and tried the recommended method:

Insert the ignition key and turn from position II (Ignition) to position 0 (All off) and back four times within three seconds.
    Remove the ignition key.
The locking control system is now in "learn mode" for the next 20 seconds and the red warning system LED on the dash stays on continuously to indicate this.
During the 20 seconds press one of the transmitter buttons.
The remotes signal and code number is learned by the locking module and is indicated by flashing the warning system LED.
Wait until learn mode times out (20 seconds) or switch the ignition back to ON.

I got the flashing light on the dash but no fixing of the issue & now the flashing light stays on!
    Thoughts welcome

Is the battery in the right way round for starters.
When you are trying to get it into learning mode are you sitting in the car with all doors closed and turn the key on and off till you hear a chime to tell you your in learning mode only then press one of the buttons and the door locks should cycle.

Yes, polarity is correct and yes to your other points. All is exactly as I described. The only result I have is a flashing light after procedure.

Elsewhere I'v read a different process:
Leave ignition on after the fourth time & press any of the buttons on the remote after the beep sounds. Should then be re-learnt

Is it beeping after cycling the ignition on and off ?? If it is does it beep when you press the button on the key ?? If it doesnt beep after pressing the key you need a new key.
