Hi all, just wondering about people's experience of adding a learner driver to their insurance. Did your premium go up much? I'm almost afraid to call my insurance company until I have an idea as to what I could expect! Thanks

It would depend on how long they have the learner permit and their age along with many other factors. You could be looking at a good chunk of cash. Probably best to call your insurance company because quoted can vary wildly between different crowds. They may offer a discount if you get a 'black box' or an app that records driving style but use caution because if you were to go over the limit or use sudden braking on a regular basis when driving yourself the premium can go up. The box/app can work for or against you.

30 y.o. male, definitely wouldn't be mad about those trackers, my own insurance already went up despite NCB and no points so it could be another hike!

Believe it or not, with Aviva 2 years ago I added my GF as named driver. She was a learner at the time and my monthly direct debit actually went down. No idea why, and I didn't change anything else on my policy. Not by much, but still strange. I didn't question it.

I looked at this recently, would have went up a huge amount, from approx €400 a year to well over 2k, the cheapest way of doing it for me was to cancel my current policy & go to Aviva, insure myself & the missus as normal, then you can buy a package from them consisting of 10 or 12 lessons & six months insurance for the learner for €500 approx

I looked into doing this when my 17 year old daughter wanted to start driving but the cost of the lessons was high compared to some of the quotes I got locally and the insurance premium itself was about €300 higher than I was quoted by some others, plus the Aviva deal only gave you six months insurance as a named driver.
In the end I paid about €600 to have her added to a policy with AA which I thought was pretty reasonable. Some of the other quotes I got were in the region of €2K....

I got a quote for this last year through RSA, for my 20yr old daughter. €2700
She is still on the bus ;)
