Stay or leave?

    Would appreciate some opinions on this. To make a long story short, I'm 99% sure I'll be made a job offer on Monday with a good pay increase. Before I interviewed at that company, I had asked about a rise in my current job. They came back to me this week with a yes and I'll know next week. I don't know the figures yet but I imagine the increase will be about 5k lower than the new job offer (we had discussed this range). I hadn't anticipated the new offer but this is with a company who head-hunted me last week.

    So I'm at an impasse:

    Current job:
    PROS:
    -10 mins from home, no commute
    -100% secure
    -Great pension & bonus structure
    -Good team
    -Relatively good company

    CONS:
    -Practically no opportunity for advancement or career development
    -I don't feel I'm learning enough
    -Don't feel challenged
    -Change comes at a snails pace
    -Staff turnover is relatively high
    -I'm at the early stages of my career (its in IT) and I've been told to RUN away by many as I will stagnate and I'm learning nothing

    New job:
    PROS:
    -Better pay
    -Opportunity to learn a huge amount, with new technologies
    -Good team
    -Career development
    -New challenges

    CONS:
    -Longer commute, no driving in, will be bussing it each day for 30-40 mins + a 20 min walk each way (up earlier and home later each day)
    -Less secure
    -No bonus structure, not as great pension scheme
    -The usual challenges and difficulties that come with a new job, new people
    -Company is not known for treating staff well, though I don't know if this applies to the offices
    -If it doesn't work out I would be kicking myself for leaving where I am

    This is a huge decision for me and has been causing me a lot of stress lately. Any input on my situation is welcome!

    Oh god, stressed out just thinking about this situation! Looks like each job would give you something the other isn't, no easy way to decide. What I would suggest is to think about what you would regret most, would you regret moving to a new job with new people you might not like and a commute leaving you less time to yourself or would you regret staying in a job that has stagnated, that you're comfortable in but offers you no more than you're getting right now? What would make you happier, more of a challenge or job security? Probably not the response you hoped for, but it would be what I'd be considering. Absolute best of luck in your decision!

    Leave current job. I've done long commutes to jobs. Had great teams in some. You WANT to be challenged. You WANT to learn new things.
    At the end of the day the FINAL call is yours OP.

    I'd look at the bigger picture and see where you would like to be in 3 or 4 years time rather than take a short term view from job to job. You say in your current job that you are learning nothing new and are likely to stagnate. Then it looks like you should move at some stage in the nearish future. You don't need to take this particular job, have a look around for similar jobs that are out there. if you've been headhunted then there is clearly a demand for your skills.

    There is no such thing as a job that is 100% secure. That commute isn't actually that bad, I'm 105 minutes each way (90 mins on the bus and 15 mins walk). If you use public transport, you can work/read on the train or bus and there is wifi now. I sleep on the train all the time. It just takes getting used to!

    I cannot comment on the two jobs though.

    Do you have kids. Need to be careful there in regards to your job security.
    If you leave what happens to any sum of money paid into the pension.can you get any of that back.
    The higher wage.is it worth it when you take in the cost of all the extra travel cost and eating costs.seeing as you can't just walk home for lunch.

    Thanks, it's a head wrecker! To answer your question, I'm not sure. I'm leaning towards the job security and short commute.

    I've been looking a lot actually, spurred by many things, but mostly money. I've done quite a few interviews at this stage, and this is the first offer I've received. There is a demand, but my skills are quite niche, so not many companies. You're right I will likely stagnate.

    It's state owned. Well, nothing is 100% but I'd be 99.9% secure if you know what I mean.

    No kids thankfully, I'm still young. Yeah I will lose the pension pot unfortunately which I'd rather keep, though only joined recently so I will only lose a few €k. I'm guessing travel costs will be roughly the same giving that I will no longer be driving as much. It's more the commute and lack of security I'd be apprehensive of.
