My contract in work is finishing soon and I will have to sign on.
I rent a room in my house and I am wondering if anyone knows if I will not be entitled to the dole because of this? I have no mortgage on the house so the rent is income for me.

Social welfare payment for those not in work but seeking work is called Job seekers Benefit and Job Seekers assistance, JSB and JSA.

JSB is paid based on your insurance contributions over the previous years of employment. It is not means tested so whatever other income you get is not taken into account. There is a payment based on number of years of payment into the social welfare system and type of payment. Self employed people do not get JSB.

JSA is based on a means test of your income and your families income. If your wife is working you will get reduced or no JSA. If you have land , a house or other source of non-working income, rents royalties dividends, these will be set off against any entitlement to JSA. Any lump sums will have to be accounted for and you may be obliged to live off these before being eligible for a JSA payment. Even if you get no money you should still sign on while you are unemployed, thsi may allow you to apply for Springboard courses, jobsbridge or Community Employment schemes later on if you are unlucky enough to be out of work for a long time. These schemes have varying lengths of qualifying time to get on them.

Citizens information is a good source of rules of Social Welfare and other entitlements. Also check out the freedom of information sections of each website for the level of details the officers use in making decisions, they cannot hide the detailed rules now like they could do in the past.
