Hi all. This may sound like a stupid question but what is the correct wasy to calculate the overall square footage of a 1.5 story house. To me it does not make sense to simply ad the ground floor to the first floor as elements such as the foundations and roof cover both.

Basically If the ground floor area is 1743 Sqft and the first floor is 1636 Sqft is it just a case of 1+1 =2?

Measure the area at each level around the external walls.
Foundations etc shouldn't even come into the equation.

Yes it would. But that's not what you asked in the OP.
