Would you chew off your own fingers for survival?

Firstly, this is in no way related to the other thread about cannibalism. It's purely coincidental and I'll prove it now.

So, I was watching Jack Reacher the other night and there's a part in it when a poor man has to choose between a bullet to the head or chewing his own fingers off. He chose the bullet after trying quite half-heartedly to bite them off. I'm not sure he managed even one, which in fairness might be the hardest one of all.

Like a lot of people probably did upon watching that scene, I did the same. I bit down on my thumb to gauge the precariousness of that situation and, well, biting your own fingers off to secure survival is certainly easier said than done.

I don't know if I could do it. It's not even about the pain - there's just something weird about it. What would you do?

This reminds me of a Stephen King short story, "Survivor Type", with the protagonist marooned of a desert island with no food. The fingers are last, in his case...

The will to live is pretty strong. Easy to hypothesise but I imagine faced with the reality you'd surprise yourself.

    And hot dogs.

    Some films have no imagination.

How much more entertaining would of it been to watch him chew his own toes off.

I'm a bit of a fat **** so I would need someone to stand on the back of my head so I could get at them.

If they were last he would have already eaten his own head, so how did he eat his fingers?

    So many plot holes.

Didn't some lad chop off his own arm after 127hours trapped in a cave.

The last entry in his diary mentions his fingers. Seeing as there are fingers on each hand, there's no plot hole there, whatever about medical ones. but it's a good story.

Batman....but you won't see that story being adapted for a film.

Yes, what was the name of that movie again?

Logically yes you should lose your fingers to ensure your survival. Actually doing it is another matter though. I doubt I could go through with it.

I recall chewing off 3 fingers when I saw that Tom Cruise had been cast to play Jack Reacher, the 200 pound, 6 ft 6 former military man with fists as big as frozen turkeys....

    Yes, that's Tom for sure.

Yeah. No problem, if the stark choice is survival or death. Where the tricky bit would come in is where you think there might be a chance of rescue before you got to that stage, so you wait, and get weaker, and overthink it, and your resolve weakens.

Doubt you could do it,too many nerves in the hand.Even if you managed one you'd likely pass out from the pain,or just take the bullet from the shear horror of it.

I have no teeth. I'd have to suck mine off. Aside from the disgusting taste; I'd die of old age before I got there.

    How cool am I?
