multi pin socket

I went to swap my stereo over today to a spare one....the multi pin socket on the back of the (not new) replacement is smaller than the socket on my wiring.

In view of this , I'm going to buy a new unit

my problem is though, how do I ensure that the unit I buy has the same socket as my wiring? Which one of the two is the current standard, assuming there is one,

(don't be asking what vehicle it is, it's 30 years old and I doubt the wiring is original)

The top one (newer) looks like pioneer:

The bottom one is probably Sony.

Lazy (but dearer) option: male sony to female ISO + male ISO to female pioneer adapters.

Cheaper (but for experienced ones): female pioneer plug + soldering wires.

top is JVC bottom could be anything!

I'm going to buy a new unit,,,hiow can I get the right connections for it....can't be as simple as buying Sony can it?

This is the plug. I can't see any splices so it could be Ford original. I didn't think a Mk2 Transit would have this.

Well, googling for pinouts will give you an information what wire goes where. No problem buying right socket and splice wires yourself. Basic experience required of course. :)

It's asking for the right bits that is difficult, when you don't know what to ask for

What socket would new unit have?

I don't know if I'd have the confidence in somewherelike Halfords giving me the right bits....maybe if I took the radio in with me.

Motor factors/halfords have them adapters/harnesses. You can bring your old stereo and ask them to find you a proper harness - at least you'd know what brand to search online. ;)

postscript. Radio now installed and working......for some reason both power leads were running from the continuous live with a switch on one of them.
I couldn't get it to work so I investigated where the power should be coming from and found a fuse holder with no fuse....popped in a fuse and it seems fine.
I wonder why someone would do that...I hope there isn't a hidden problem in the loom I can't see!
Also found that the beeping noise I thought was the old radio shutting down is still there! There must be an alarm or something somewhere , I can't find it!

My bet is on a problem with current leak (maybe faulty old stereo). Keep your eye on a battery, just in case.

I've no idea about that beeping thing - is it going off the speakers or other source?

hard to say where it's coming from! I check battery condition regularly.. my money on some one (like me) getting frustrated and bodging a short cut having forgotten to check if there was a fuse fitted! :-)
