Trinity College Pool

I'm considering joining the gym to use the pool.

Just wondering what people think of it?

I'd heard from two separate people that the pool temp. is quite low.... I'd be surprised if that's true. I'd have thought pools operate almost at standard temps now.

I'd hoped to join the Markievic but it's still closed with no fixed date for opening. Structural problems with the pool it seems.

I've swam in it, lovely pool. Didn't notice any difference with pool temp with others I've swam in. Think Trinity pool has problems itself. Tiles coming loose but they are addressing this.

I've swum in it many times (used to be a student), can't say I ever noticed the temperature being considerably lower than elsewhere.
I agree with mad m, the pool had a lot of structural problems and seemed to be closed quite often when I was using it (sometimes with very little notice); the changing area also seemed to be a constant building site, with ongoing tile problems there too. I would try check up on that and see if they are still having problems, and bear it in mind when thinking about membership.
It can get quite busy at peak times (mornings & after work), like many pools I suppose.

I swam there a few weeks back, was baltic, coldest pool I've been in for a good while. The girls with me were blue and shivering getting out.

They also had a display case to the right of the reception desk with a sheet saying something along the lines of "due to the number of complaints received about pool temperature they have recently lowered it..."

Pools are kept at different temperatures, rehab pools will have a high temp, a pool with kids and general public use wil have a medium temp, hotels tend to have high temps. Pools that are predominantly used for lanes , competitions, training will have a lower temperature. As your body will heat up when your using it

Some of the pools I worked in used to vary the temperature on the client base. Cold for lanes , warm for kids classes.

I'd have thought it takes quite a while to turn the temperature of a pool? Can't imagine the average x5 lane 25m can swing much in under an hour?

A nippy pool will prob. work in my favour once it's not unreasonable.

Very cold (baltic!) and not very clean changing area. If you could find a difference place, do!

We managed about 1.5 drug an hour. So you could have you wanted it warm for 10am you could have it cold for lane swimming at 7 and then start warming it at 8

I'm a member there and love it.

I swim most mornings at 0700 and never really noticed a problem with the temperature.

The changies can get a bit manky towards the end of the day because of the volume of traffic through it.

How much is membership and can it be be monthly? I'm looking for somewhere temporarily whilst the Markievich remains closed.

So I joined about 2 weeks ago. Fairly happy about with the place I must say. I've been going early AM and the pool temp. and facility are perfect.

Does anyone here go to the TCD pool after work hours, like 5pm-ish?
I know a lot of pools are a bit packed around this time, but since it's a college gym I'm not sure if there would be an 'office hours' peak.

There is a 'peak', and the pool would be busy around 5pm. While it is a college gym, there are also non-college members who use it, plus many of the college staff & students who follow a 9-5 type day. I used to go around 5/6pm as a student, before heading home, and it was always busy. I don't remember it being unbearable, but that was a few years ago so I don't know what it's like now.

They're doing some work on one of the pool walls at the minute. It's at the end of the lane and they've sectioned part of the wall off so you cannot turn against it. This means the lane swimming is down to 3 lanes as the area where the other 3 had been is now about a big rectangle. So x3 lanes where you can turn and then a reduced rectangle for casual swimming where you can only turn off one wall.

Worth considering at the minute. Very slow progress on repairs (but it could be WR pace for all I know about pool repairs)

That sounds very like my experience Seanie when I swam there as a student. There seemed to be constant issues with the pool and/or changing area, and repairs appeared to be very slow. It's a shame as it's a lovely pool.

Been using it for 3 years. Good pool good location. No temp issue.

A lot of the users are people that do not understand lane etiquette. And it is liberally policed.
Also, there hasn't been a block of months where there is no technical issue with the pool.
Changing rooms are filthy. And staff keep signing clean chart regardless. I've said it to them a few times. But its falling on deaf ears.

But apart from that I have no complaints.

Of all the pools I've swum in as a member of the public (i.e. not with a swimming club or group), I can think of only one where 'lane etiquette' wasn't a problem. A lot of people seem to transform into ignorant and inconsiderate idiots when they get into a swimming pool, and lifeguards are usually too spineless to say anything.

Does one need a swimming cap for hygiene purposes or flip flops to swim in TCD's swimming pool? Thanks!

    Hats are required. Shoes optional.

I agree with most of the previous posts. Nice pool but there's always something that requires fixing. Changing areas & sauna could be cleaned more often. I think drainage is also an issue. There was an almighty stench of piss from the poolside toilets when I was there on Wednesday which definitely wasn't just a case of them needing a clean!

I think they do vary the pool temperature. It seems to be warmest at weekends when families are in and coldest when there are swimmers in for training. Possibly my imagination of course!

It can be a bit busy but it's very rare to have more than 5 in a lane while often I get a lane to myself or just one more swimmer. 6-7 is busiest but nothingl like as busy as the Markievicz when I swam there.
