I bought a brand new car middle of January. I've still to get a tax book and tax disk in the post. I realize it's normal for it to take a bit of time and January is their busiest month. But how long should I wait before start checking everything is right...?

You should definitely have it by now.

The dealer wasn't pre-registering it or classing it as a demo or anything were they?

    You actually taxed it, yeah?

Expanding on colm's post. You won't get a tax book until you tax it. If you haven't paid the Motor Tax yet, that's the reason. If you haven't you should be able to do it online.

You can tax it online using the reg number and the last six digits of the cars vin number as the pin.
As mentioned you won't receive the VLC until the car is taxed.

Got car on a Tuesday, did tax online at the dealers. Had the tax disc 2 days later and the logbook arrived on the following Monday morning.

Ok, so I haven't taxed it!
The dealer never said a word about it!
Thanks for letting me know how to do it online.
