Was sold on a 2010 Ford Smax but have since found out that there is no airbag or safety device for the back row. We will have 1 child in the back row at all times.
What mpv big or small in the 12k to 17k price range would have?
    Thanks.

Not to answer your question, just make a point.

I always worried about a rear end smash on those 7 seaters, as when seats 6 & 7 are in use, they are usually only a few inches from the rear door, which I'm sure wouldn't take much of an impact?

Add to this the fact that seats 6 & 7 in these cars will likely have young kids in them 99% of the time.

That was one consideration I made when I bought the Honda FR-V instead, as it has 6 seats and still a normal boot between the rear passengers and a smash.

Weve a VW touran and its something we had to take a hit on we dont always use seats 6 & 7

The galaxy is a bit bigger with bigger seats but there right at the back as previous poster said so any big whack could potentially be bad news

This is how airbags are typically laid out, the only one the middle row passenger would benefit from is the curtain airbag, which the rearmost passenger also benefits from.
If you are very concerned about safety then putting your kid in the very back of the car with very little crumple zone must be questioned. All the airbags out there wouldn't make a difference to the rearmost passenger if the car was badly rear ended. Most people will chance it though as you rarely hear of fatalities in mpvs from rear end collisions, and massive mpvs just aren't available in Ireland unless you get vans with Windows.
There's far worse than the smax out there though, at least there's a bit of space behind the seats.

Are the newer mpvs giving greater protection for the back row? I think the French cars anyway. Would prefer not to go there, but got to consider safety these days.

No the don't include rear end in NCAP

Crumple zone is from wheels to bumber all 7 seater have rear most seats in that zone.
Worse I've seen is taxi conversions of vans and they stick rear seats against rear door.

There have been some crash tests done on this topic

Poor quality video but you get the idea

    Fiat 500L

Opel Vectra hits Toyota iQ and Mercedes M class hits Renault Grand Scenic

The second and third videos are in German but if anyone is interested in this they can google for the test results from the ADAC/Auto Bild and then use google translate.

Mercedes vito combi or viano has plenty of boot space behind the rear seats, most would be the extra long wheel base which has 1m of boot space from seats to door

The rear 3 seats in a Honda FR-V, showing amount of boot space between passengers and a smash.
