Insurance looking for Off the Road Dec Letter

    Hi guys.

I don't know if anyone can help me with this. My car has been declared off the road the past 12 months. I am getting it insured through my previous insurer but they want a letter stating that it has been off the road the last year. They said go to the revenue/motor office and they will provide a letter stating this.

I have checked the motor tax site but can't find any details about this so I am wondering if anyone has been in this situation before what was needed for the insurance company.

    Thanks in advance.

Perhaps because there is a possibility of the OP simply driving without insurance or having had insurance and not informing them (because of a claim).

yes, you aren't obliged to declare it off the road if you don't want to

what difference does it make if you took a year out from insurance? How would a letter prove anything, if hes driving without insurance I hardly think he would be bothered with sorting the tax out.

Why would they want such a letter?

It hasnt been driven in a year and I have a year gap in insurance too as I havent driven it so they had to talk to their underwritter to allow them to insure it again but wanted a letter stating it has been off the road a year. Its Axa btw.

Its an 01 car so could it be the fact its 15 years old? I honestly dont know but they want a letter.

Edit: I assume that if I ring the motor tax office they can provide the letter?

I think this tactic from insurers is an effort to clamp down on cars changing names and being driven on extensions without cover.
Wouldn't make sense in this case however as the op has no policy at all in force.
There is no legal requirement to declare a car off the road. If the op didn't bother then paid the back tax a year later, there would be no law broken as long as it wasn't used in public.
Of course the insurers can seek whatever they wish.

I got through to the local tax office just there and they will send me out a letter stating its been off the road so I can give it to my insurer.

If the mod's want to close this thread they can as my query has been resolved :)
