BMW new Bosch coil fail out of box. How common?

I recently replaced a coil in my car and the new one was a dud. I was a bit cheesed off as I had my car stripped down, tools out over the drive and then had to tidy it up, get a different mode of transport to get the replacement (no quibble with local motor factor).

It was a Bosch part, brand new... I was wondering how common is this. My gut feeling is I must have just been unlucky.

Friend of mine had the exact same thing with his BMW. his mechanic says its very common for the Bosch coils for BMWs.
