Seeing SMS on unresponsive android

Hi lads I have a Sony phone that was dropped and I am wondering if there is anyway of seeing texts on the phone when the screen is unresponsive? I can see that there are new messages delivered to the phone but obviously unable to access them. Have any of you ideas of work arounds for this?

Had you got any app that backed up your sms to your gmail on there?

It's possible if you have enabled USB Debugging or have an app like MightyText or Pushbullet installed.
