Caller ID on a landline.

Hello This is in regard to my parents landline phone. And them receiving inbound calls. e.g. On my mobile phone I have "show my caller ID" set to ON. I make a call from my mobile phone to my parents landline and on their landline it only shows up as "external" it does not show my 087 xxxxxxx number. Is this something to do…

Hello

This is in regard to my parents landline phone. And them receiving inbound calls.

e.g. On my mobile phone I have "show my caller ID" set to ON. I make a call from my mobile phone to my parents landline and on their landline it only shows up as "external" it does not show my 087 xxxxxxx number.

Is this something to do with my parents phone handset?
OR
Do I have to contact the parents landline provider and ask them to turn something on?

If it happens from any number that calls them then you need to have their provider enable caller ID presentation so that the exchange sends on the info.

The provider should turn it on,
A UK type of phone may not work correctly as they use a different CLIP Presentation.
As far as I know Eir(com) have it on by default.

Is caller ID presentation normally free ? Or do you have to pay for it

One that was bought from a UK chain like Argos for example. You'll be able to tell because it probably came with an adapter to convert the white UK style BT plug to our RJ11 standard.

Ah sugar. That's the phone type they have. Just checked and it's even a BT phone. And it has that converter too. does that mean it won't work on this phone.

The converter is so as the BT plug will fit in Irish socket and that the phone will actually ring.
However it will not convert the incoming number type.

I actually removed the converter thing. And just used an rj11 cable at both ends and it still rings etc.

But no caller ID. They just bought this phone. Should I definitely try and return the phone. Or should I check first with carrier to see if caller ID is turned on - by the way your talking that does not seem to matter as its a physical phone issue.

I've read them but still don't know if my issue is the physical phone or not.

Thanks. I think they might be with IFA telecom, so could be an ordeal getting CLIP turned on.

Generally the phones sold in Irish owned stores like DID, Power City or Woodies are for the Irish market so would be compatible with the CLI system we use here. I have a Siemens one bought in Woodies that works fine here.
