Adding extra speakers.

I want to add a pair of speakers to the system nearer to the Driving seat as it's a noisy old heap and I can't hear too good (I have hearing problems anyway).

There are already speakers front and back , can I just tap into the wires to one pair of speakers or should I disconnect one pair and use that wiring?

are you sure you don't just need a better radio?

have you an idea where you could fit the speakers near the drivers seat?
you could replace the factory speakers with similar size just higher spec, but i cant see that being majorly better unless the old ones are shagged.
you could build an enclosure box and maybe mount it in the rear footwell If you don't carry rest seat passengers.

I assume the sound just distorts when you turn the volume up. an amplifier probably wouldn't go astray either.

what car is it and what radio is in it?

should have mentioned it's a Camper....there is no distortion, my hearing is poor and the van is 30 years old with associated rattles and crashing etc.

I only want to know if I can just splice into the existing wires and thus have 6 speakers or whether it would be best to re-route the wiring of one pair to the new speakers.

reroute the wiring from one pair.
it'll give you fader control so you can adjust better.

id just use a stand-alone radio for when you're in the back

Had a look at rerouting the wiring. I'm going to have a re-think and maybe go with your first suggestion of a better radio, (with new speakers in the front on the bulkhead behind the driver)

The balance and fade functions don't seem to work, they don't even appear on the menu . I used be able to fade and balance, so it's a fault that has appeared over the winter. I don't imagine it can be repaired or reset, I don't recognise the logo on it even.

So I'm thinking of replacing it . Any suggestions? I don't need anything fancy except the CD and the remote control function I liked.

If you don't mind spending a few quid this head unit will be the best solution to your problem. It's got a powerful 40x4 watt RMS amplifier built in.(most head units are only around 18x4 watt RMS) It should improve the sound quality dramatically but you'll need new speakers that can handle that power.
