I am doing a masters in finance and have to do a thesis. Would anyone have any advice on potential research topics? Or even ideas on the current key issues/ problems/ trends causing difficulties in the markets?
    Thanks in advance

theres so many areas that you could look at, that its difficult to give a recommendation. Maybe think about the following first to give more of a basis to your thesis

*What area interests you ?(what do you look for when you read the financials)?

*what area do you want to work in when you graduate?

*What resources do you have for researching (eg internet, bloomberg, reuters, datastream ,periodicals etct). No point researching something very mathematical if you dont even have access to mathematical data etc!

*what interests the person marking the thesis? Will they already have a good understanding of the issue or just a general idea (means you really have to know your stuff...if they know more than you, its dangerous to go down that route)

I was thinking of doing it on ETFs but I'm having difficulty thinking of a specific topic. I have access to a bloomberg terminal so should be able to find the data required

A juicy one would be...The effect(s) of negative interest rates on...(enter sub-sections at your own leisure).

It is relatively new, and not many would have a thesis written on the subject.

Definitely would get attention at interview stage, but it depends if you want to play it safe with "ETF's" or be brave and stand out from the crowd.

    All the best.

Are you constrained to any topics? Generally thesis have a wide variety but just wondering.

What ever you pick just make sure you have access to the data for all aspects of your research, I left my data mining pretty late and it gave me a bit of a sting.

I got asked a lot about my thesis in interviews, it's good to be able to relate to whatever positions you may find yourself going for after college.
