is there anyway preferably free which one can find out if an old car is on the road still or not or even check when the last time it was taxed. I bought a new car in 1998 (diesel) that is probably scrapped now but am just interested how long did it stay going for after I had it. Or whats the cheapest way online to find this out.

Go into www.carsireland.ie and basically sell a car. Put in the reg and on the form it'll have pre-filled put the tax and nct expiry. If it's blank then it's not taxed/nctd.

You can check nct expiry in the nct site.

The nct site will tell you if it's been officially scrapped or not.

Our family's old 1990 Renault 21 is still on the system with an NCT expiry of April this year. Blimey!

that's a wicked wheeze! My 1990 Sierra is still taxed, but of the cars I bought new, all before my 2003 BMW have gone it seems. :-(

Both my 306 TDI (1994) and my Golf GTI (99D..) are no longer active ! I saw the GTI about 2 years ago, so it must have been a scrapage deal or crashed.

What? our old renault 19 that was burnt out in 2007, nct is due in august?

I used to own a red Fiat X1/9 reg 380DPI.

That reg now comes up on Carsireland as a black Fiat 124.

Can number plates be legally transferred in Ireland? Why would anyone want to?

    Indeed.

My old long since dead 1990 Fiesta is due its NCT in March.

Pinch of salt with this check I think.
