Jaguar XF Smart key

Hi, I have a 2010 Jaguar XF. I got a message this morning that the smart key battery was low. I went to get the spare one and that was dead. So got the batteries this evening and asked someone with a lot more experience with these things to change it for me. It just wouldn't work so he gave up and said it was broken. I then managed to successfully change the battery in the spare one myself and realised that a part of the circuit board had been broken off the other one and that's why it won't work. I now only have the one key. Will I have to replace the other one completely or is possible to get a new circuit board for it? Any idea how much it'll cost and will I have to go to a main dealer? Also for future reference, is there any way of getting into and starting the car without the smart key? Thanks :)

Give a locksmith a call and see if they can replace the key and at what cost, then ring a main dealer to see what they are charging. You might want to be sitting down when you ring the dealer as Jaguar parts are well known for being expensive.

Ok thank you, I wouldn't have thought to try a locksmith. I've been driving the car for nearly a year and thankfully haven't had to replace any parts but I've been warned by several people about the cost. Do you know if it possible to access and start the car without the smart key?

Is it part of the actual board is gone, or one of the micro switches that sits under the buttons?

The board itself is intact but one of the parts that 'sticks up' (I assume one of the micro switches as you said) is gone.

I used these guys to repair my old Renault key, all sorted really cheap compared to main dealer.

As mcko says, if it's just one of the microswitches that has broken off the board, you could get a repair done
Would be way cheaper than a new key and board

If the part that "sticks up" looks like any of these:

Then a repair should be possible. It might be worth to show the board and missing part to a mobile phone/laptop repairer, if it's a simple soldering job they should be able to do it - even an amateur PCB builder/electronics enthusiast with decent equipment should be up to the task.

I found a guy that says he can repair it for €80 which I thought was very expensive, until Spirit quoted €388 for a new one. I'll be going for the repair option obviously.

H3llR4iser yes it looked a bit like those but I don't have the bit that fell off. I don't want to open the working one and look just in case I end up with two broken ones.

Are you new to Jaguar ownership? I'd be delighted with any XF repair that only cost €80!

It was my late Dad's car, I'm a full time student trying my hardest to keep it as long as I can cos it reminds me of him. It had a full service for €300 a few months ago so relative to that, €80 for a key repair seemed expensive.

Fair play to you. I take it it's the 2.2 diesel? They're quite economical, and some bit of kit. But as you've discovered, trips to the vet can cost a truly lip-slobbering amount of money. Best of luck with it, and enjoy your time as a Keeper of The Big Cat!

It's the 3L diesel but I find it very efficient fuel wise. The DPF warning does give me periodic heart attacks but the last time it went red the garage was able to regenerate it and it's been fine since. I do love it, mainly cos it was Dad's car...and it's a lot of fun seeing people's faces when they ask/see what I drive!

Take it out on the motorway and give it boolah for an hour. That'll DPF the thing and dummind paying a garage to do it. ;)

If the warning light is yellow, 20 mins in sport mode clears it no bother, last time it went red and no amount of flying up and down the M50 would clear it, had to be regenerated. Shout out to Yomac Cars for fixing it and servicing the car for a lot less than I expected and then fixing an oil leak several weeks later with no charge.
