    Hello everyone,

Do social welfare accept DA applicants who suffer from depression? I've been on JSA a while and things have been a bit much and I was recently diagnosed with depression and anxiety.

    TIA

Go and see your GP and ask him/her if you should be on a disability payment ie are you fit for work.

In my experience (work in mental health services) this would be very unusual; we usually see patients with chronic, and probably to some degree treatment-resistant schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder or OCD rather than depression or anxiety on DA. Occupational and social functioning is part of the treatment for mental health difficulties, i.e. back to work and hobbies as much as possible along with medication and psychotherapy.

Would you be in a position to apply for illness benefit? Did you work in the 2014 year. I think it's 39 weeks you need to qualify. It's paid up to 2 years.

Hopefully, the OP has heeded this advice in the 6 years since they posted.

Depression is what I was initially awarded DA for. Prepare for a first time rejection, and have your doctor draft a letter explaining the severity of your situation to submit when it goes to appeals.
