Crossfit .... Should I ?

    Hi ,
    I'm about to start Crossfit...I've watched tonnes of videos on why people shouldn't do it.

    Just wondering if anyone has any advice on it ...

    Hi Novice-Refurb,

    My advice is to take your time in choosing a box(gym) to train in. Its an important decision. There are more and more boxes cropping up around the country and around the world. Some are only ok, some are amazing, filled with amazing coaches and athletes. Speak to the coach/coaches, tell them what you are after and what you want from your training. Ask them plenty of questions about their methods and programming. Do some intro classes and get a feel for the palce. Finding a trainer who is both knowledgeable and sensible is the key. Injuries you would have read about in Crossfit come from 'coaches' who think they know what they are doing after spending two days at a seminar and then blast the music and let people lift heavy weight without correct technique etc.
    The Crossfit gym you are after as a first timer (This is assuming you have not done gymnastics, olympic lifting etc before) should have an introductory program/on-ramp to ensure you have correct technique and form down before you put any weight on a bar. Ideally your first few classes you will just be lifting a pvc pipe or wooden dowel. Don't see this as something silly or beneath you. I've seen far too much of trainers and trainees getting hyped up and excited about putting some big numbers up with incorrect mechanics only to end up harming themselves. The best gyms are those who lay a solid foundation first, thats what will give you the biggest benefit and thats what will ensure you remain at it and fit for life! :)

    If you are attempting to do Crossfit outside of a box (like in your garage) and you are not familiar with olympic lifting etc, I'd suggest to get yourself to a local weightlifting club or crossfit box to get some coaching first.

    Good luck with your choice and I really hope you enjoy wherever you go. It really is a fantastic method of training when done correctly.
