Shuvosaurus, graceful croc ancestor

    I've just read about a marvellous relative of the crocodiles, Shuvosaurus; looking at his reconstruction, one would hardly imagine him to have any kinship with crocs,and yet...

    Here's a link to the article, which also speaks of Shuvosaurus as an interesting case of convergent evolution.

    This is actually closely related to Effigia, which I mentioned in an earlier post. They were definitely not croc ancestors, tho.

    If not actually ancestors, how were they related to crocs? Where should we place them on the genealogical tree?

    Check the last tree at the bottom of the page. Shuvosaurus and Effigia belong to Poposauroidea, so they're a different branch from true crocs.
