Car with a €7k budget

Looking for something 2007 or younger, no bigger than 1.8l for the tax, budget €7k. Looking for a saloon car, not another bloody 206. I don't drive a lot at all, considerations are tax & fuel economy, and looking good on the road :o

Some recs I've got have been an Avensis, Passat, C5, Ford Focus.

I'm more confused by the variety of choice at the moment, so any hard recommendations would be appreciated. I'm a 40 year old guy if that makes any difference.

I'd recommend an msport if it was any BMW but a quick glance at donedeal shows something like this?

For 7k - you will get a fairly decent car.

    All cars have their
    Strengths & weaknesses
    Admirers & Detractors

    You mentioned
    Avensis, Passat, C5, Ford Focus
I would add Lexus, Nissan Primera & Honda accord to that list
C5 - I think they are lovely (but I thought the suspension needs looking at after 5 years - this may be for older models)
Primera - no longer made (but loads of good 2008/2007/2006 out there for 2k-5k, I'm trading in a 2007 1.8 auto getting 3k which is really 1.5 to 2k). They are hi-spec and go forever if looked after
Passat - Some of these look really well, but hear of fuel injection issues (but I would still buy one)
Avensis - Can't go wrong, but expensive for what your getting (are they really more reliable than the other makes?)
Renault Laguna - See a few 2011 on DD for in around 7-8K. 1.6DCI

Take a few test drives - and narrow down the field
    Whats important to you?
Reliability, Safety, Looks, High spec, Fuel Efficiency, Tax & running costs
Private - Garage - Dealer: Some good value for 2007 to 2009 out there from private sellers

Other options - Citroen Picasso (great car, my wife have one for 13 years, never let us down)

When you have the money - the world your oyster. Happy Hunting
