Ok, so my wife and i bought a 3rd car for summer use, an MX5, its in need of a few repairs before we use it so i want to declare it off the road until its all good to go.

Its last tax ran out at end of august 2015, will i have to back tax it or can i immediately declare it off the road and not be stuck with the back tax?

If so what do i need to do?

I was on hold for 18mins in the motor tax office hense my asking here.....

well if you owned it last august then you at the moment need to back tax it. But if you bought it since then you only have to tax it since you bought it. Your only liable from purchase date

sorted so...still have to pay from then but at least it gives you an incentive to get it repaired and on the road faster :)

you are probably too late after "a few weeks" to declare it off the road and will have to pay back tax to the first of the month you bought it in..... or sell it to your wife/brother/friend who can declare it off the road immediately.

Depends on the date of change of ownership you (and the previous owner) put down on the tax book before it was sent off to Shannon. I would assume it was 26th January, in that case you are liable for tax from the start of that month, so Jan 1st.

Just re-read the op. I had similar problem when wanting to declare a car off the road after buying it, the tax book also took an age to come through to me. Long and the short of it was, I went to the local motor tax office to explain the situation in person. They looked kindly on my case, even though I wanted to declare it off the road from a date in the past. She couldn't give me a 3 month declaration but checked with the office manager and gave me a 12 month off the road cert. I then just sent in a tax renewal form at the beginning of the month that the car was ready to drive and was only liable for tax from then. Hope this makes sense.

You have 21 days from the date of sale to declare off the road, otherwise the clock starts ticking - so today is the last day for you to get it sorted. You should be able to do online - use PIN retrieval to get a PIN and the go to SORD section of website.

    When did this change?
It used to be 10 days before.
