    Hi all

Can anyone advise approx. how long it would take on the train from Dublin to Killarney?
And how much it will cost.
Plus where do I get the train from?

I have tried to look online but I can't get a price, my head is fried.

    Thanks

You get the train from Hueston.

You're looking for trains with a destination of Tralee.

It's the same route as the Cork train as far as Mallow. In Mallow either the Cork-bound passengers change trains or the Tralee-bound passengers change trains.

Killarney is 4 or 5 stops after Mallow - but they announce the stops in advance.

It takes about 3:30 hours - but I'd imagine this can be affected by connections in Mallow - I do know that the connecting trains seem to wait in Mallow if the incoming Dublin train is late.

The cost depends on when you book. e.g. it would be nearly €50 if you travelled today, but €22 on days next week (one-way fares). There may be better offers on other days.

Use irishrail.ie and in the bit at the top put your departure as Dublin, your destination as Killarney and the date you want to travel. Specify return if that's what you need. If you buy online you will need to pick a journey and if you want to change that later you will need to go to ticket office at Hueston and you pay a change fee - don't know what it is now, but it used to be €10. I don't know how long you can change by and if you can change onto a later train if you've missed your train - I've always used it when I'm too early to Hueston and don't want to wait. On the board at Hueston it will tell you if you need to change at Mallow and they will also announce it on the train.

Go here and type in your start and finish points.

    http://www.irishrail.ie/timetables/live-departure-times?code=HSTON

If you go to Killarney from Heuston today and return tomorrow cost is €47.99 to get to Killarney and €37.99 to get back so €85.98 total and takes approx 3h16 each way.

    Way cheaper on the bus!

The open return price from Heuston to Killarney is €90.

Buy online, in advance, you will get it for around €46 (€23 each way).

OP would you consider flying Dublin to Kerry and then getting bus/train from airport to Killarney. Flight is circa €82 return. Takes an hour at most. If you live near the airport it's a handy one.

The Kerry airport is in Farranfore, which is about 10 miles/17 km from Killarney. There is no train service from the airport to Killarney. There is a Bus Eireann service to Killarney, that does a pick up at Farranfore, but it's not that frequent. You could be waiting over an hour for a bus. Getting a taxi would probably be easier.

Dublin Coach now service Killarney. Buses depart from the airport & the Red Cow Luas stop, as well as the city centre. Fares are 20 euro each way. Journey time is about 4 hrs 20 minutes.

There is actually a train every two hours from Farranfore to Killarney.

And Farranfore Station isn't that far away from the airport; it's a miles walk.

Mind you, OP has still got to get to the train, figure out the timetable, the website, the phone number for ringing them, the door to get on the train :pac:

This was my plan but when I went to book flights, the latest return flight is at around 1pm which is far too early.

I will be getting train from Heuston in Dublin, thanks for the help everyone.

    The wipers made me dizzy;)

Used to fly to farranfore regularly before wife and kids arrived.
Drive out to the airport. Cup of coffee and paper before boarding and arrive in Kerry in an hour.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but it might save clogging up the forum with new threads...

If I have a ticket from Dublin to Tralee for say 1pm and I take the train as far as Milstreet, get off, spend a few hours in Milstreet, can I then get back on a later train to finish the journey to Tralee (on the same day)?

As in I have paid to get to Tralee from Dublin, and the sum total of my trip is still the same, I'm not getting extra journeys out of it, but I am getting a 'stopover' and catching a later train..

Is this allowed? Or would I need to buy a new ticket from Millstreet to Tralee? Or just pay the 'excess' fair of 10 euro as the train is on the same day...?

Only permitted using an Open Return ticket bought at the booking office.

You cannot break your journey with a ticket purchased online.

    Well that isn't true.

I have many times in the past bought an excess ticket for 10 euro which allowed me to catch the next train to Kerry, having missed the one I had booked online (for the same day). So the excess fair allows some element of flexibility, it's not as black and white as you suggest.

Furthermore, of course someone could 'break' a journey by getting off a few stops ahead of time, or in some other way. Who would stop you getting off a train a few stops early? Or catching a train a couple of stops down the line, say if you missed it at your stop and raced it to the next stop or the one after.

Things are not as rigid as you say.

Getting a later train is entirely different to breaking the journey.

Breaking the journey means stopping somewhere along the route for several hours and then resuming the journey.

Breaking the journey is NOT permitted with an online ticket. A new ticket would be needed for Millstreet-Tralee - not a €10 excess.

Who would stop you? A member of the RPU who could issue a penalty fare.

You're twisting my words to bring up the RPU - I never said who would stop you if you didn't have the right ticket, I said who would stop you getting off a train a few stops early, or catching your train at the next stop than you were meant to get on.

OK - so now I know, the excess ticket doesn't cover resuming a section of a journey at a later time, only the commencement of a journey at a later time. That is the info I needed.

    Thanks.

Basically the online ticket covers you for one single journey from Heuston to Killarney but allows you to get off at Millstreet, but your ticket can not then be used later to travel from Millstreet to Killarney.

If you have an online ticket for a certain departure from Dublin and want to travel on a later train you pay the excess fare at the booking office but this does not allow you stop for a few hours anywhere along the route.

ONLY tickets bought in the station at the booking office can be used to "break" your journey, online tickets have different terms and conditions prohibiting any break on your journey.

It is interesting that open tickets bought at the ticket office can be used in the way I want, because when I go to book a student ticket online the return cost is 36 euro, but then when I check the cost of an open ticket on the tickets and fares section of Irish Rail, it says the cost of an open return student ticket to the same destination is also 36 euro!

So if an open can indeed allow me to do what I want and break my journey, as you say it does, then I just need to get it from the station and I am sorted! Which is great news! The only downside I can see is that I won't have a specific seat reserved, can easily live with that :)

According to the website ticket information page for online tickets it is only Adult tickets that have a surcharge when getting a later or earlier train, there is no mention of any surcharge for child or student online tickets just that it is subject to availability.

I always buy at the ticket office where possible (assuming the same price or cheaper) as an open return is a lot more flexible.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but....

I've to leave Dublin at 3:30pm next Friday to head to a stag in Killarney. I have to drive, train n plane ain't an option.

Google is telling me to go down the M8 and turn off at Mitchelstown but anyone I've spoken to have said to go via the M7 to Limerick.

    Which is the best/fastest route?
