Renaming roads in Athlone

I see that Sinn Fein want to start naming some of the "new" roads around town after the 1916 Republicans.

Is there no end to this backward looking mentality?

The country is already flooded with (excuse pun) Pearse Streets and Connolly Streets.

Now we in Athlone are again to be inflicted with Pearce roads, Connolly roads etc.

If republicans want to honour their 1916 dead then so be it, but please don’t inflict the rest of us with all those oh so boring and dated place names all over again.

Why not involve the public with a competition for suggestions for said roads, I’m sure that they would get many interesting and original suggestions.

And we have Griffith Street (Glasse's Lane) though I doubt if the change was at the behest of Sinn Fein. SF don't go a whole ha'p'orth on the founder of their party.

It is being proposed by sinn fein that our roads be named to commemorate the republicans who died for Irish Freedom.

What about all the brave young men who gave their lives in the First World War and died in their thousands so that we can live in freedom today.

They have been totally ignored ever since.

First I've heard of this (probably from being on the ros side of the border so I may as well be on mars) what names are they suggesting if you happen to know?
