    Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a 2013 Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI CR SE (manual).

Does anyone have any experience of these? Any issues to look for?

    All opinions welcome!!

    Thanks.

I have a 2012 Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI 170 bhp from new (the one with all the mickey dazzlers, but not the L&K one).

I love it, hard to find a similar car as well kitted out for the same money. 3 problems I have had:
    1. one of the rear lenses was fogging up (on the inside) and had to be changed. One of the lower front fog lenses is also showing the same symptoms, and should be changed (though still working).
    2. I got an error message on the screen a while back. Buttons on steering wheel didn't work and had to have some component on steering wheel air bag changed (apparently it is a common fault).
    3. Real 'First World Problem'. The driver's seat electric heater went kaput and had to be changed.

Thanks for the comments, very helpful.

I'm looking at the 140bhp. I'd love the 170 but budget doesn't stretch.

Is the 140 powerful enough to pull a full load as it is a fairly big car?

Id say its plenty especially considering you can get them in a 1.6.
You can always get it remapped or chipped to 170 if you think it needs it

Don't know, only way to find out it to test drive it. My previous car was a Passat with that 140 hp engine. And it was a real beauty of an engine, went from a 2.0L Accord with 150 bhp to the 2.0LD with 140 bhp and there was a massive difference (the diesel being much better).

For what it's worth my Superb is due for replacement this year. I was in a Renault garage recently looking at a Kadjar, and the salesman enquired "what are you driving". When I responded "Skoda Superb" he only said one word (literally)..."Bulletproof".

And of course there will be loads of people out there who will say that anything is bulletproof compared to a Renault.

Skoda are still good but over the entire range they just are not as good value. Skodas big selling point was that you get a quality car with tons of extras, of Volkswagen quality but for less money.

The most recent incarnation of their cars don't have the same value proposition. Extras are starting to mount up in cost instead of being standard, and if you do a close comparison you can see where they are going with cheaper materials inside, or leaving little touches out altogether.

E.g. Last Octavia had nets in thr boot and a little solid plastic handle to lift out the boot floor to access the spare wheel. Newer ones have thr nets as an extra, and the handle is gone, replaced with a little hole to out your finger through.

It's a small thing but little signs like this are all over the latest models if you look hard enough. Still great cars but not as good value as they once were.

I remember top gear australia tested a 2.0petrol 150bhp golf against a 2.0tdi140bhp anf the diesel came out on top in most regards, faster round the track was one of them even though it was heavier and less power but it had more torque

I just actually got one last week. 2.0 170 Combi 2011 Elegance from UK. Absolutely in love with the thing. As another poster mentioned, Elegance is not quite the full L&K spec, but it pretty much ticks every extra box you could imagine! Have since upgraded maps/firmware to current and picked up a spare wheel. If I were you I'd go a bit older and get a better spec! The 170 has a fair bit of power. I've heard the 1.6 can be a dog to drive, but I'm sure the 140 would be more than up to the job.

Can't believe the price of the new ones! When picking up the wheel I saw they had a top spec L&K Combi 2.0 190BHP 4x4 and it's around € 52K!!!!!

    Have 2011 170 elegance with 130k km .
Bought it Nov 2012 for €22k with 80K km and was a bit worried that it put up that mileage in 18 months, but I have to say it is the best car i have had in 25 years of driving.

Great levels of equipment- some more useful than others eg self park is not usable in real life where as I will never buy a car without Xenon lights again.

Fits 2 plus 3 young adults easily while carrying all i need for work and thats a lot.
Only thing that failed is the rear demister, relatively common according to Briskoda. ( Climate control soon clears all windows so not a great problem )

In day to day driving you would probably not need the extra 30 BHP of the 170 but every now and again its good to have it for that N-road truck overtake.

I would have no hesitation in recommending one although I am disappointed to see the new price creeping up and the standard equipment creeping down.

Drove a 2011 170bhp Elegance with DSG recently and seriously regretted not leaving a deposit, cos it was gone when I went back for it :(

Fantastic car for the money and laden with all the extras you could want. Ive since driven the 1.6 version and found it a bit sluggish. Im on the lookout for another now and its looking like I'll be taking a trip across the pond to find the right one. Great value for whats in them and you would be hard pressed to find a similar car for the money.

Seen one on DoneDeal in Longford.
Its a UK import. Milage is high (think its a Dec 2011 registered)
Did consider it - but getting rid of my 1.8 petrol 2007 primera needs to be done first

If I had the time (and the money) - a trip across the pond would be worth it.

I drove this last week and it is amazing. Doesn't suit us (Mrs. CuriousB wants an SUV) but gorgeous car!

I'm trying to decide whether I want a 520d auto or a superb dsg from the UK. My head is telling me to go for the superb for reliability, comfort, space and toys.
My budget is 12-13k cleared. I'm looking at 09-10 in the superb with 70-80k miles. Am I being too optimistic on the price? I'd probably go for the 140hp superb then remap it to 170 to save some money in that respect

How reliable are the superbs and dsg? Are they as comfortable as 520d?

I doubt though I'll be going for the 520d due to timing chain issues

The Superb won't be anywhere near as refined as a executive BMW. Noise, Vibration, harshness is how manufactures really separate out the feel of their cars and the superb you'll be far more aware of that in terms of wind noise etc. DSG boxes don't have a great reputation for reliability, although I'm not sure if the 6 speed is as troublesome as the 7. I could be wrong there. Overall Skoda are one of the few bright spots for VAG when it comes to reliability.

We've a 13 170BHP DSG superb combi on 18inch tyres and it's actually not a bad drive. The space is excellent inside. With the pano roof and leg room the rear passangers really have great space. Ours is fully loaded too and besides a tendency to eat running lights has been faultless. A couple of things irritate me: the power delivery isn't as linear as I'd like. You find yourself waiting for it to kick in owing to lag. The fact that that car won't hold itself on a even a slight incline is more of an issue. 18 inch tyres, while far better than I expected in terms of comfort are a balls in terms of wear. The roads by us are ****e and I think we replaced three Goodyear eagles within 7 months owing to damage. If I'm being super picky, external noise is very evident. The touchscreen is slow to start and is cumbersome. The blower takes forever to defrost the front window. Edit: the keyless entry hates me and I'm never sure what it's going to do with the non driver doors.

But you can't beat that space.

Have a look a the forums here. Very helpful.

    http://www.briskoda.net/forums/

I looking to move from a 2008 318D to a Superb for space & comfort. I'm told that the 140bhp will pull as well as my BMW which is more than enough for me.

    Good luck with your search!!

Thanks for the input. Looks like it'll be the 5series. The only thing putting me off the 520 is the timing chain issue. Some were fixed under QE but a lot weren't. BMW UK still seem to be running the QE when I enquired last week but I'm getting no soot from bmw Ireland.

Im looking at loads of cars but I'm still drawn back to the 5 series. Ideally I'd love a 530d but vrt rates are ridiculous. So it'll be a 520.

Is autotrader is the best for sourcing cars in the UK?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,555 ✭✭✭PGE1970

Yes - It's where I got my 3 series (in Scotland). Over and back same day.

I paid to have a RAC report carried out first. Costs a few bob but it'll cost a lot more in the long run if the car is a dud! The garage selling had no problem with this and allowed RAC man to test drive for me and carry out the inspection. If a seller is hesitant about this, I'd walk away particularly on a car out of manufacturer's warranty. There are plenty of cars out there to choose from.

You'll see threads on boards re the timing chain issue or there are plenty of bmw fora to search on.

    Good luck!

Ebay is another place to look. There are a lot of dealers with classified ads on ebay

    Hi,

No - I didn't in the end as brexit meant that I've waited to see how sterling would fare out.

I intend to change next February when the part-ex's come on the market from the 171 reg's.

My budget might now extend to a used current model Superb but my wife is hell bent on another beemer.

I expect that I know who will win out!
